SX/MX without radios is so 20th century

Watching Indy qualifying today I was reminded how laughable it is to think SX/MX racers can't receive pit board information via radio as they go past the mechanics area. "We can't have radios because they're concentrating!" meanwhile Indy car drivers are communicating 2 ways at over 230 MPH. NASCAR and F1 can handle comms at over 200 MPH but our racers can't receive verbal updates.

I would like to see what is would sound like for us to hear the comms. Would be pretty cool.

I would think SX has a lot of noise around the riders going on so might be difficult to hear.

Would the spotters tell the riders where to block on the track or play tactics when the rider behind him is faster?

Anyone have the photo of Jeff Ward with the Rice Krispies box taped to his helmet?

It's an expense mx can do without.

I think they should use two coffee cups and a long piece of atring

What info do you expect the team to be feeding the rider?

Tell me how it will make the sport better.

If you’ve ever watched Cooper Webb you’d know these guys don’t need help on information of what someone’s doing, it’s all their. Pitboards relay all the info needed, lap time and gap.

|

How would it make racing better ?

The usual response is why? How?

My two cents? (Not that anyone is interested), Stop making it illegal. Don't make it required. ( Oh. Crap! It's out there with no regulation at all!) And let the teams and riders decide how and if) they want to respond.

BTW. That's the very definition of freedom.

If it isn't readable on a pit board, they don't need to know it. Short of some motivation, a lap time or a gap, it just complicates things.

It's another extra little expense, it's another added little complexity, but really it just comes down to the fact it's just not necessary.

I used to like mx / sx due to the simplicity, it was almost elegant how simple - besides fancy materials and machining of factory parts and set up - and clear cut as pure racing machines these bikes were.

It actually slightly irks me to see suspension data loggers, lambda sensors, all these other things creeping in on race bikes. For practice / development sure, but they're gonna be like Superbikes in a few years, who wants or needs it?

F1 drivers often get very annoyed if they are radioed during corners or in braking zones. Communicating on a straight at 200mph isn't a big issue.

So it's not a fair comparison. IN SX or MX the riders are always doing something whether it be jumping cornering or whatever.

If the teams thought that it would be better to have radio communication then it would have happened by now. There's no point adopting technology just for the sake of it.

I’m a fan of the pit boards for communication and no radio’s simply for the fact it doesn’t allow discrete outside assistance. Riders have to make their own decisions and judgements based on what they can see and hear is happening around them and that’s when I think we see just how talented a rider really is in terms of strategy.

“Jason, Eli is taking the tight inside before the whoops and might try it on the last lap for a pass”

*Jason takes the tight inside on the last lap. Fans are denied a moment of good racing*

Why is the sport going to be better for it??

Just to think, some fans call for HOLESHOT/LAUNCH devices to be banned..

Once SX/MX goes all electric, the teams can just yell out to the riders.

We use 1 way communication in Pro Snocross. It really helps actually. Some guys don't like it but if you have the opportunity to use it, it is rather useful.

The guys who hire lawyers so Harley-Davidson riders don't have to wear helmets are not the same people who write the Supercross/Motocross rules. For that, you want AMA Pro Racing:
