I'd say Ryan was much more reliable than a modern diesel.

is "diesel" a metaphor for "not really as exciting as the others"?

It's a backhanded compliment.

You can't give yourself a nickname, though.

I got the impression that RD got a bit tired of the term "consistent" being used so much to describe him as a racer, though it was his greatest attribute as a racer. He probably thought nicknames like "The Diesel" and "Mr.Consistent" were a bit less appealing than what he would have liked. Perhaps he's over it and understands that he was dubbed these names because of particular quality traits he possessed throughout his racing career.
I'm pretty sure he was just kidding about the nickname Goldenrod... wasn't He? laughing

For the record, I think the asterisk is BS in the post-Carmichael era. To be a champion now, you have to avoid seriously hurting yourself not only at the plethora of races, but in the massive hours of testing, practice, and training. It's a separating factor, like purposeful training once was in the U. S. Roczen was awfully good at that for a long time, not so much lately; Musquin has done well in that regard. Anderson seemed to crash a lot on 250s, believing he belonged up front, but survived that phase and moved into 450 contention quickly, which makes regular open practice motos and testing in CA seem all the more insane.

Anyway, anyone giving Dungey asterisks should deliver them with proper respect. One reason pro motocross first developed with long motos was so that the quickest starter or fastest rider didn't automatically win. Now the long U. S. season has that potential equalizing effect for the championship.

Note the effect that getting hurt in his last MX season, not missing paralysis by much, had on Dungey. He still loves to ride his dirt bike, loves to train, just does not want to hang it out as far or leave so much up to chance. He seemed to "recover" from the demands of being a contender pretty quickly. Does anybody coming up on 250s look like they will outlast everybody as well each season?

I thought "Golden Rod" was quite funny but didn't seem to catch on...

I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not too sure.
