I probably have had too much coffee but here is a question that popped into my head.

So if a race is red flagged and the riders are to do a staggered re-start. The rules state that no rider may pass the rider in front of them until they cross the white line.

So now onto the conspiracy part. Bear with me here

Lets say that they are forced to do a restart and Webb is in like 6th. Lets say that Kenny is in 5th and still has beef with Webb. If Ken were to not move when the flag drops, wouldn't that in theory hold up everyone behind him? In this example, force Webb and everyone else to sit on the start straight until Ken crosses the white line.

Not saying he would do this of course......

And what would the point of this be? Let the other 4 guys in front of Kenny pull away with the race. Lay off the coffee lol

in my example it would be more like "F you Webb and your points lead."

I had this same thought when Kenny was in the lead... if they threw the flag and Kenny hesitated just enough to make ( webb I believe ) behind him let off the throttle and grab a bit of brake, then Kenny takes off, he would start with a good lead.
This was the race Malcom hroke his leg

Or just "stall" the bike...let Webb pass him before the white line. Webb incurs penalty...Ken smiles. I've had too much coffee as well.Whistling

While it sounds silly, their back and forth with each other is at about that level as well....

Same could be done with a red cross flag section. Rider in front knows rider behind is very close, he checks up and rolls even slower to creat bigger gap.

Think about the antics Tomac pulled in Vegas with Dungey —it is entirely possible that if points battle is down to the wire that kinda of crap could very well happen.

What about a team play scenario.. Say Tomac gets on a run and its him vs Webb/Musquin for the title. What would they do if a guy like Savatgy would just sit there for a few seconds?

Im guessing they would inflict some sort or rule buried in the manual somewhere that is the vaguest thing you can create, slap a big fine on it, and then restart the race with said rider DQ’d.

I actually thought about this when Sexton had the lead on Forkner and they had a restart. I was thinking, why would Sexton start on the flag drop as Forkner went right with him. Leave him guessing for a bit so you get the jump.

Your first mistake is thinking the FIM/AMA enforces the rules consistently and equally. ?

PLAGIARISM!
I actually had thought about this, and brought it up a while back in a thread on here.
There definitely is potential for shady shenanigans.

I imagine they would probably black flag the rider that is holding up the race and just restart.

Duuuurty . Dirt bike riders would do well to think of the karma of things. Lucky is sometimes the best thing to be...

They would say Webb didn't intend on passing Roczen, therefore no penalty would be incurred.

Teammates could and should pull this at any opportunity toward the end of the season. No rule against it.

I don’t get why the 1st rider goes as soon as flag is waved, surely someone on the team would have bought this up???

If I were in the lead, I'd play a little game called, "will he or won't he." I'd slowly ride toward the cones and blip the throttle, brake check people and then hammer it at a weird time.

I always wonder why the leader doesn't flinch. And mash on the brakes to jam up the whole field when the green flag drops for these restarts. Guy in the front of the line could open up a 5 second gap instantly.

Now the only way to eliminate givignthe lead rider a huge advantage would be to double slot them. 1-2 start in first row. Giving lead the choice on which side.
