A manual would be a great start, that will explain it all. It’s a job, and if you don’t have any experience at this, you’re in over your head.

The shift fork needs replacing. This was a problem with '96 RM250's. I've have one replaced years ago and vaugly remember it being around $800.00 parts and labor. I still have the bike and need it done again. At some point I plan to restore mine and dread spending that coin.

Did you take the motor out then take it to the shop or just take your whole bike to get worked on I was thinking just taking the motor it’s self in to save time for the mechanic

If you can't do it yourself the cost of a shop would be snuff to buy yourself a good bike.

I took the whole bike and let them handle it.

All you need is a hammer and a screwdriver. Take the engine out with the hammer and jam the screwdriver in between the cases and separate the cases. Replace shift fork and boom, you're done.
