I've been buying spare wheels for all my bikes off eBay etc, mostly from bike wreckers.
Loads of them out there , sometimes getting a complete wheel with disc for as little as $100, from older YZ's.
Fit new bearings and they've all been fine so far.
Thought I might pull them all apart to thoroughly clean the hubs, the spoke threads and polish up the spokes and nipples as well as sand out scratches on the stock silver rims.
Is it worthwhile getting the rims powder coated black , or should they be anodised?
What is the finish on a standard black Yamaha rim...paint or anodising?

The standard rims are anodised. The easiest way is to just buy a black excel or DID rim. I've had a rim which was re-done with powdercoating but around the edges chips of black will fall off after a while.

I've heard powder coating wheels is a bad idea because the heat from the powder coat oven can weaken them and lead to cracking.

Thanks guys, powder coating is out then. I will probably just sand and polish them. It's strictly about budget.
I can't find new rims anywhere for a budget price

Ovens to cure powder coating are definitely super high temp. But isn't Anodizing a high temperature process as well? I've dealt with anodizing a bit but don't know much about it.

No, you actually don't want to bake them too hot when powder coating Aluminum (not over 250-300F I think). If you have someone who doesn't know what they are doing they can compromise the integrity of the rim by going too hot for too long.

Not even remotely hot enough to affect the integrity of the wheel. I have built dozens of wheels using powder coated wheels and hubs....Never an issue. A good powdercoater can pull of some really sweet colors.

Tusk rims an option for you? They are pretty cheap as far as rims go and good quality.

Can't buy them in Australia, would cost more than $200 per rim to get here, more than $300 for takasago's.
Not to worried about it, just thought I'd ask.
Will just go with sanding and polishing.
Spending $100 to 120 for a second hand wheel with disc then another $40 for a bearing kit gives me a worthwhile spare for tyre choice / quick change.
A set of brand new aftermarket wheels here is typically $1200 to $1700 then you have to buy discs, sprocket, sprocket bolts disc bolts...
My eBay specials have worked out well.
One rear hub was loose where the bearings go, scribed some cross hatching into the hub then loctited the bearings in, worked good.
