Stanton and Dungey come to mind with guys who won titles with less wins than their competitors. I believe Stanton only won 3 races in the 1992 SX season.

Here's what I have, going back to 1990:

14 wins (01 Carmichael, 96 McGrath)
13 wins (07 Stewart)
11 wins (02 Carmichael, 09 Stewart)
10 wins (95 McGrath, 04 Reed, 93 McGrath, 00 McGrath, 13 Villopoto)
9 wins (16 Dungey, 08 Reed, 12 Villopoto, 94 McGrath)
8 wins (15 Dungey, 91 Bayle, 99 McGrath)
7 wins (14 Villopoto, 03 Carmichael, 98 McGrath, 05 Carmichael)
6 wins (10 Dungey, 11 Villopoto, 06 Carmichael)
5 wins (97 Emig)
4 wins (90 Stanton, 18 Anderson)
3 wins (92 Stanton, 17 Dungey)

Also of note: 1990-1991 the season was 18 rounds.
1992-93 was 16 rounds
1994-97 was 15 rounds
1998-2007 was 16 rounds
2008-current was 17 rounds

Jeff Ward had one win when he won the title in 85. There were 11 events that season and it's when they ran the 2 moto format so I'm guessing he probably took the checkers in more than one of the motos but he did only win one overall event.

Ward only won 1 overall in 1985 on his way to the Supercross title, but that was the year of the 2 moto format.

Bailey won 2 main events on his way to the title in 1983. Hannah won the most, but got hurt and Bailey was consistent the whole season and seemed like was second every week when Hannah won.

Consistency can win titles, but outright speed usually prevails.

Ha we had the same idea. I wish they had a moto by moto breakdown of that season.

I’d rather have a title and the bonus dollars than the most wins.
Personally I’m the opposite, I did a poll on this a while ago and the results were pretty even..
that feeling of crossing the checkers over and over again would be more satisfying to me

Also, not premier, or whatever you want to list is as over the years. Willie Surratt 1987 125 west.

Man that graph would show rc and Mc equally goatish.

Yeah, the most wins seems to have a heroic feel about it but it doesn’t give the big bonus or the record in the history books. But I get what you’re saying, definitely a cool factor

Color coded, so you can see the different riders easier.

He did win motos though which are individually scored races. Short series also.

When was the last time someone went on to win the title after not even being invited to the A1 press conference (with 11 people invited!)

Thats MC's argument as to RC being the goat.

Wasn't SX but Jean-Michel Bayle won the 1991 250 outdoors without a win.

This is only SX...go to the Outdoors. That's where the argument of the who's the GOAT ends! Cool

McGrath could have been 8 straight! That's insane.

He missed it by 15 points in 1997.

It went wrong in round 1 when he finished in 15th place and lost 9 points to Emig.

He fell three times on the first lap, and cruised the rest of the way for a 15th place finish. It was the first time in four years that McGrath wasn't the points leader at any point of the season.

Anderson actually had 5....If he were on a Monster bike he would not have been penalized...and also won the prestigious Triple Crown series (some sarcasm in that last sentence.
