From Hangtown Kickstart

'Did you know that riders are prohibited from jumping obstacles on the first lap of the first practice session? In stark contrast to the mind-blowing first-lap air at a Supercross event, riders are encouraged to become familiar with the track at Nationals before taking to the skies.'

I think this is Great!

I believe riders are not allowed to jump the triples in sx during the first lap of practice.

Do you go out and hit every jump your first lap at your local track after they change the layout?

It's the wheels on the ground flag. They wave it during the first lap of each session. When you cross the finish line, you get the green flag.

Well yeah it's very normal here that you don't jump on the first lap. Just wondered why it has a thread when it's normally done like that.

That not true. I see guys every weekend in the untimed practice hit everything lap 1.

At their level you might be surprised what they are perfectly comfortable doing just from eye balling it as they approach

At our local races they lump all big bikes in the same practice, skill level doesn't matter. I prefer to roll first lap. Johnny A class (races C) is set on kill all the way from the track entrance. So I lose at least a lap of practice because I want to check things out first.
Wish they did it this way

Dude, just last weekend I had some dumb ass almost land on me, first lap, second jump. We were 2 and 3 wide, Vet split, just rolling around and checking it out, and this chick (#604 at Albany MX - watch out for her) decided to huck it and missed me by a foot. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

It's my biggest fear. I'm cautious out there on lap 1, but too many are not. I've had buddies get landed on and that ended it for them. People don't friggin think sometimes.

Whether or not this has been around for a while for MX in America or anywhere else in the World, I think it's smart and I don't see how everyone would know about this as it's only for the first lap of first practice, which most people don't get to see. It should be adopted by local practice tracks too. It would probably take some of that pressure off of little Johnny who is chomping at the bit. I wish our tracks did this too!

Part of the reason that this is done is so that riders know where they can expect to see these flags.

I've had the same shit here. Even if the layout is relatively similar I keep off to the side and wheels off the ground just so I can take everything in again and get it fresh. Maybe I don't have big enough kahonas to do every triple first lap or something.

I'm just glad that tracks have become a little more tame over the last few years in comparison to the stadium whoops and steep jump faces that were all the rage 10-15 years ago.

I prefer hitting a long rut, bars as close to the ground as possible, nuts on the gas cap, the top of my leg pressed up under the bars as far as I can and not losing my balance and dragging my foot. But jumps are siq too. So steezey.

Sorry F’d the embed on my phone.
haha yeah i was about to bring this up. This rule they're discussing was not in play back then. It was let em loose and I do not recall there being an extreme amount of injuries on the first laps. Maybe there was but i'm not sure the reason they changed this rule.
