JW's comment on RV champion " Rich kids don't make it, there just not tough enough"
Is this true? Are they any rich kids in the main event?

There is probably some truth to that, of course there are exceptions to be sure.

I heard blake wharton's family is well off

I guess maybe its better to ask have all AMA Motocross champions come from humble beginnings?
I heard a Hannah interview lately stating pretty much the same thing as Weimer says

AC92.

I think it comes down to talent and determination. Some are well-off and not talented/determined enough to make it. Some have lots of money, which helps their natural ability by providing the best equipment/environment. Then some have raw talent and determination and work their way up. Some put it all on the line and have no choice but to make something of it.

You would almost have to be rich to follow that series on your own dollar.

If a family has enough money to afford a traveling amateur mx career then they're probably "rich" under many definitions of the word.

The Alessis were far from well off, Tony was a dispatcher for a trash company.

I Honestly cant thimk of a single champion that came from a wealthy family. A.lot of wealthy kids rolling around 10-15 though.

Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that people of means understand the importance of an education and are unwilling to trade an education for the possibility of a career in racing motorcycles.

it has more to do with a rich kid willing to quit rather than try harder when he gets a bad result.he doesn't have to work to get better to get more money if he's already got the money.

Interesting. I remember seeing the footage of what looked to be one of TP199's first rides on a mini-bike, he was riding in a large driveway infront of an awesome looking house -- I always assumed they were set financially.

I don't know about you, but where I'm from those private schools recruit low-income high-talent players and a family "sponsors" the kid.

we should forward this on to Matthes as a moto trivia question....

...I'll bet some euro champs came from wealth , the average family in europe could barely afford the gas money traveling around so much.

It's called hunger. If you're always able to eat, you've never experienced it.

IMO, largely myth built up by people who resent what other's have. If that fuels you, more power to you.

There are hyper competitive wealthy kids as well as hyper competitive poor kids. And lazy for both as well. People who end up achieving do so because of the way they are wired. In every sport.

"Poor" is a relative term as well. Anyone who can afford to get into bikes and get to enough races to establish themselves is hardly poor in real world terms, even if they don"t have a financial safety net if they fail. There are a lot more young people who lose the chance to ever see a dirt bike because they lack money than find their way to success because they are motivated. MX has some pretty steep economic barriers to entry for someone who is truly poor.

They give financial aid (scholarships) to the best athletes from the wrong side of the tracks.
