Renthal Twinwalls (cut crossbar?)

Im fairly certain Renthal would object. I recently bought a 125 with some Twinwall bars, and previous owner has cut the crossbar at the center, and put some tape over the seam, and installed bar pad. Is this common? I assume they were looking for some give in the cockpit. Anyone ride twin walls with no crossbar?

We remove the crossbar all the time. It gives the bars the perfect amount of flex. Plus, the stabilizer fits better.

We have done it before to offer more flex. It's legal, you will be OK.

Think Ill remove it, wouldn't want a crash to expose the cut edges of the crossbar.

Renthal does not object at all, they even recommend it if you would like more flex. Do not believe me? Call them.

What BobPa says....I too contacted Renthal and confirmed that they say it comes down to personal preference.

From Renthal: "While the bar is still safe to use without the crossbrace, there is only a slight difference in flex and a very slight loss in overall strength.  We use a special adhesive during the manufacturing process to install the crossbrace clamp, which helps prevent any squeaking while riding due to the flex in bars."

Just curious... Why not just run the renthal fatbar?

Little OT, but has anyone else broken twinwalls before? I have run the 921 bend for almost ten years now, and I managed to break two pairs of them in some pretty moderate crashes. I never cut a crossbar before but it seems like it would make them fail even more readily, or maybe it would give them enough flex to not break so easily.

Love the bars anyways, I currently have some on YZ250 that probably have 200 hours on them, they creak pretty bad.

I run them with the crossbar removed on the 921 bend because it's the straightest bar I could find.

You could slide both halves of the crossbar into a metal sleeve. This will keep it lined up and allow it to flex.

Had a set of twin walls and I cut it with a jack saw then wrapped it in tape. All good man, go rip it.

I will never buy ODI's again. Bought them a couple of years ago. Went on a trail ride and about 20 minutes in hit a slick spot and had minor tip over...The bars folded like linguini. Asked my Parts Unlimited rep if I could get a new set at a discounted price, as this was unacceptable for $100 bars. He asked and they said they could do nothing. I understand that bars will not have a warranty, but my rep knows I am not a bullshitter and was not trying to pull a fast one on them. Really bummed me out because I loved the bend.

Well shoot, thanks so much for the compliment! I'm Joe Lloyd and I'm the owner of JCR Speed Shop.
We build off-road bikes- mostly for Baja guys. I also sell a lot of graphic kits and trail tools.
I work close with the JCR team to make their parts and practices available to the public. The fun (but infrequent) part is being around Rally, GNCC and Baja racers (and their factory bikes).

But at the end of the day- I'm just a super fan who works too much and doesn't get to ride enough. Sound familiar?

Xeno, this seems off to me. I've personally seen several pairs off twin walls literally break, always where the inner bar comes out of the outer bar. Probably because of the design focusing the stress points and flex point to a small area. And I've never seen a fat bar break, although they do bend in a bad crash. Twenty five miles from anywhere, I'll take a bent bar over a broken one.

Here you go..Stock KTM Fat bar 827 my son over jumped a fly away into the face of a roller at speed and the bar snapped just outside of mount sending him end over end luckily he got his bell rung but that was about it. So I would say anything is possible..
