Hopefully it's a second rider on his team. That would be classified as a big announcement. No way it's retirement

Retirement is what I hear RT @jminnesota: @pulpmx Chad Reed said he had a big announcement for tomorrow. Do you any thing about this?

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he retired, if he's not into it anymore, what's the point of dragging out his MX career? The dude's got a fat bank and tons of opportunities to do other things.

I doubt he would announce a brand switch this early in the year.

I'm hoping it's not a retirement announcement. Toronto seems like an odd place to make any announcement

First K-Dub, now Reed...the new CRF450R doesn't have a good track record so far...it's putting riders in to retirement...

Very good point DJ. Hadn't thought of that. Would be odd. Would be better off doing it mid-week from home.
A brand switch would be better to hear than retirement.

When is this announcement supposed to be? It's not something that we are going to have to wait weeks for is it?

If Yamaha has an all new bike coming out and it seems that is the case then I can see it. He is out of the SX race so changing is not going to hurt a championship run. Maybe Yamaha made him an offer he could not refuse.

Funny how people try to blame the bike for making people retire !

....when it's so obvious that its an age thing !

If chad could love the 2011/2012 crf450 which in stock form had reputation for stinkbug and unbalanced , why would the 2013 crf450, which has way more balanced chassi be any worse ?

I rather blame the SFF air fork than the bike , if anything !?

Well, he is under contract with Honda. He can't just jump out of it like that.

Hondas need to come with a warning label. That all honda riders will get bucked! Totally off topic here but Honda has had way more career ending injuries than any other brand. Fonseca, Bailey, Magoo, Hansen, RJ, just to name a few...

Is it just as a bike supplier or is it more involved than that?

Hope it's not retirement, was hoping to see him win at least one more race next year in person.

If he did retire and knowing (he has said countless times) his passion to go car racing i wouldnt be surprised if he closed the doors on the Team.

I will be bummed if it is retirement, but a guy like Chad can't happy if he isn't at least getting on the box regularly. Guy has a young family, plenty of money, a business, and one of the greatest moto careers that has ever been. He has earned his retirement for sure.

Then again I could see a brand change if he isn't getting along with the Honda. His interviews have him much colder with his opinion of the bike this year than we've seen previously. We also know how little contracts mean in this sport and with his future at stake, Reed could push for a change and make it happen.

That's lame that James single-handedly made Yamahas too slow for anyone to buy because he couldn't win on them but Honda can force people into retirement mid season with no repercussions.

It's lame people think it was only James that hated the Yamaha....

As for Reed and Windham, it was questioned if either rider would be back this year, and at what level long before they got a new bike.

Based on performance, one wouldn't be chocked if its retirement. Seems he's one of those that will not dig being a top 10 rider "only" being a multiple champ and all, maybe it's all or nothing for him, RC-ish. Also he will not in my opinion manage to be a windham kind of a guy, that despite not being top dog will still make people shiver. Him being a smart guy, it would make sense for me to se him being a team owner, building some Larry Brooks stuff, but with his knowledge, persona might have even more to to offer? I don't like seeing him perform like this, and I don't think he's up for it either. Hopefully stays in the sport, play it safe, not expose himself from danger, crashing, focus on family and business. As a racer, I think he's done. But, I know shit.

This big announcement according to me:

Looking at his results this season...

1. Why would he get a new big sponsor in the middle of the season ? ( if he was racing for the win, ok ! But that isn't the case right now)

2. A second rider to his team ? And who the hell would that be ? The only one that is available and healthy right now is Pourcel... and what is the chance Reed would sign somebody like that ? ( if Townley hadn't broken his collarbone last week I might have guessed he was on the team for the nationals but that doesn't seem to fit right now !

3. Retirement ... To me that fit the most of em all. A season with struggles, age 31, a family that needs more and more time, a great career to look back at....sorry guys, Reed will retire after SX ! I'm 99% sure

Chad being a vocal and expressive personality, it would be hard for him to keep it a secret for long if planning to retire. i can see him leaking that a "big announcement" is coming, just when talking to various people -- but that doesn't mean it's going to happen in Toronto. could happen at any point, it's just on his mind.

Why would he announce his retirement in Canada of all places, why wouldn't he wait until he was back in the US and do it when his wife and kids were there. Although he hasn't had a win this year he is still 4th in the points and on a bike that according to what JT$ said on the pulpmx show that Chad isn't the only one having trouble with. Something just doesn't sit right with the whole retirement thing. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

I'll bet it is retirement. He's not the type to want to be a fifth place rider. He really has a powerhouse team, though, I really hope he picks up another rider instead of just folding. If he rides the rest of the SX season, maybe someone would be available. Does anyone know if Short's BTO deal is SX only? I also wonder how Metcalf's Canada deal is structured.
