Years ago when a Honda F1 engine failed the party line was that it was an ignition failure (not a Honda part).

The reality was that a rod broke, went through the side of the block and blew the mag off of the motor...thus the "ignition failure."

Compared to a 15 year old bike, evolution hasn't added more than FI and valves (and what goes with that), it's not much more stuff than that is it? Seems electrical failures are the most common issue these days, maybe that was the case 1998 as well...

Yep. Justin couldn't get it to fire and pushed it off. According to the team, it fired up back in the pits.

Crazy, how do you label an error like that, wont start when crucial, then later starts in the pits. Something went wrong, but in the end nothing was wrong problem... Maybe it was an issue of leg fatigue...

I had a friend there who was near the pits when it was wheeled in, fired up 2nd kick, ran fine....apparently no smoke and sounded very crisp ....

"all new for 2014"

i didnt say it was ok, i just said that honda is the only one who completely dumped them all the way through the product line. go blame the consumer, they're the ones that bought the 4 strokes.

i dont need to "go" ktm, i bought a brand new 250sx last year. i didnt just post online that i want 2 strokes around, i actually went out and threw 7g's at a company that will continue to build what i want.

Newer got the issue to start with, that was supposed to be cured with the hot start gadgets, only to disappear again with EFI, but now a similar issue has come back? Was this the case with Dungeys KTM last season as well ( despite electric start)? They have their complexity no doubt, but after EFI seems people get them fired up more quickly these days no doubt. Remember last year when KR or was it Marvin that just pushed the e-start after stalling in SX, it made my YZ125 kick start breeze look almost troublesome! Smile

No.
It was because they could see the future of two- stroke fans, and all the threads they would ruin.

I was referring to Honda not producing a mini since 2002, my point was they stopped making them BEFORE they started producing 4 strokes.

So because Honda compeltely 'dumped' them then they are the blame for other manufacturer to produce a lot less of them, because that is what your original post implies :-)

well good on you....congrats, I am sure everyone else buys what they want not want others WANT them to buy

EFI has definitely helped. The only time my 13 CRF250 has refused to start was when I cartwheeled it on my 3rd lap of Dunkirk, which is deep deep sand and the bikes run real hot.

If I had done the same on my 04 i'd probably still be kicking it now.

I hear you. Odd thing, of all the Fs I have owned, the only bike that I ever had issues starting was my CRF450 EFI. Sold the POS, and the irony, which equals one of my greatest moment in my "racing career" was winning the Wick in the Mickey Mouse class, because the guy that should have won (he beat me pretty easy second moto), stalled his CRF450 EFI and couldn't get it started.

Listen to his agony (while I and many others passed him)...

My '13 Kawi 450 starts hot and in gear just fine. Probably better than when it's cold, I'd say.
