So we were going through a good friend of mine old family photos and we found these original photos of his grandfather and some other guys racing motocross on there converted Harley Street bikes to dirt bikes. It appears to be from the 40s? So I thought I would share them here. Would love to have some feedback on what you think? Great window into the history of our sport.

This is awesome. I bet back then they just raced and didnt argue about seat bouncing and if jumping over the table is a quad.

Pretty cool stuff, my grandfather did hillclimbs etc. in this era too before my dad was born. Pretty sure they were called scrambles back in this time and not motocross? Correct me if I'm wrong

These pics were hanging in a restaurant in Florida. I do not know the story behind them but they are cool!

I love the universal appeal of racing.

Guy1 - just got a bike
Guy2 - hey me too. Bet i can ride mine faster.
Guy1 - oh yeah?

And it goes from there. The speed, adrenaline, ego, machinery. It's all pretty cool stuff.

No suspension, no power, super heavy, took a real man to ride one of those...

Anybody have any specs on bikes like those? HP? Suspension travel? Weight?

State of the art equipment back in the day.

Just think if you could take a new KTM FE back in time to those guys. Crazy how far we have came.

Dude with the bikes in the back of his trailer is pure moto. Totally bald trailer tires and new rubber on both bikes.

Yep! Reminds me of my buddies and me loading 3 brand new 250’s in the back of a piece of shit old $1500 truck and going racing. We had our priorities straight!

These are gold. Thanks for sharing! Amazing at the size of the crowds back then. Great stuff!

Like ZEHN mentioned, my dad (b.1917) lived in CA and when he came back from WWII he bought two Harley 74ci bikes and converted one to do hillclimbs.

Cool photo posted by HondaMan66. Side car, dog, shotgun, deer, pipe, hat... this guy is a multi-tasker! No one is going to take this guy out in a corner.

The old school hillclimb guys were beyond gnarly, we’re talking steel paddles with no fender and no suspension. Helmets were optional as well!Laughing

Kind of crazy to think but about a year and a half ago I raced in the 100th annual Great American Hillclimb, they’ve been doing that event for over 100 years now!

Awesome stuff.

My grandad landed on Gold Beach on the 7th of June 1944 as a member of the 7th Armoured Division 'The Desert Rats' as a dispatch rider. I believe he used a Harley Davidson and/or a BSA at some point (he said the American equipment was brilliant though).

After the war he rode scrambles while he was still in the army, they even held the races on old battlefields. He was demobbed some time before 1950, he never did ride again after that for some reason but its pretty cool to think he was there at the start of the greatest sport on earth, even if he didn't know it at the time.

Not sure if those pics are post WW2 but if they are it makes perfect sense. Those guys had been through hell...a broken neck didn't scare them one bit. The Greatest Generation...getting thin on the ground. Thank 'em when you met 'em.

Yep, and it's gonna be suckish for several more months. My old bones are screaming. I spent several hours loading an old King Air fuselage onto a trailer with a crane. The wind was trying to spin the whole thing around...let's just say I'm glad no one filming it. My fingers are still numb.
