RacerX Eddie Hicks story

I got to give it up to DC and Mathes for a great story on Eddie Hicks. I had always wondered about him and what happened to him. I use to sit in study hall and drool over that DMC YZ 80 he had. Now I'd like to see a story on Dave Miller. Great piece!

Cool to see the photos from the Minicycle Rider/Racer Magazine. I had a few issues when they were printing those.

Whatever happened to Paul Denis? He's another "wins everything" kind of rider who just disappeared into thin air.

Great read. I never met Eddie, but grew up in the southern California racing scene from 1980 to 1990 and the guy definitely hauled the mail. Glad that whatever adverse circumstances occurred in the past, are now behind him and he's doing ok.

Cool Read. Someone on here said they saw him working at Walmart a while back. Didn't look close enough to know if that was in Califonia still or Florida.

Eddie was a bad ass, went to high school with him, he was a few years older and he lived up the road. Fast as hell and style for days!

What a great read. I wish there were more photos of Eddie from back in the day, though, instead of the drawings.

Paul use to post here occasionally in the old school forum as Former NMA Champ.

WOW I have known Eddie most of our lives, grew up in the high desert area and remembered him signing his first contract. I am a couple of years older than him but many of us hung around together (Rick Hemme, Larry and Lanny Turner, Chris Cole, Jimmy Ryder) and we did get into some trouble.
Last time I seen him was at AV motoplex a few years back riding the track on practice day.
Here's wishing you the best Eddie.

Great article...thanks for posting on the RacerX website. I'm the same age as Eddie and raced him a few times at the amateur nationals....those were great times for minibikes, and that 1983 KX80 was a game changer.

But yeah, those Yamaha's were not good bikes back then. Colin Edwards is another who had his struggles with that YZ80 a few years later, and eventually quit MX. Worked out a little better for him, though. Best wishes for Eddie...still a huge fan of his!

Well, to be fair..Bradshaw did alright on that bike a couple years later.

No question that the 83 KX80 was miles better than anything else. I remember all those Yamaha ads / promos with Eddie Hicks in them and I certainly remember one of the magazines printed his quote 'Stock Yamahas are too slow!'

If he stayed on 80s in 1985 and went to the 86 YZ125 not the 85, with better support...who knows what the outcome would have been...or had he gone to Team Green.

Pretty sure the article said a Walmart in Florida.

That was absolutely one of the best articles I've seen on RacerX.

Kind of painful to read, realizing how a few decisions at distinct moments can have life long impacts.

Anyone know of any video of Eddie Hicks racing that bike? I searched YouTube and found nothing, but I put in Eddie Hicks maybe it's under some other title. Any help is much appreciated !

Not on the DMC YZ but from 6.20 there is some footage of Hicks as mentioned in the article.
