I got to give it up to DC and Mathes for a great story on Eddie Hicks. I had always wondered about him and what happened to him. I use to sit in study hall and drool over that DMC YZ 80 he had. Now I'd like to see a story on Dave Miller. Great piece!
Whatever happened to Paul Denis? He's another "wins everything" kind of rider who just disappeared into thin air.
The Shop
Last time I seen him was at AV motoplex a few years back riding the track on practice day.
Here's wishing you the best Eddie.
But yeah, those Yamaha's were not good bikes back then. Colin Edwards is another who had his struggles with that YZ80 a few years later, and eventually quit MX. Worked out a little better for him, though. Best wishes for Eddie...still a huge fan of his!
No question that the 83 KX80 was miles better than anything else. I remember all those Yamaha ads / promos with Eddie Hicks in them and I certainly remember one of the magazines printed his quote 'Stock Yamahas are too slow!'
If he stayed on 80s in 1985 and went to the 86 YZ125 not the 85, with better support...who knows what the outcome would have been...or had he gone to Team Green.
Kind of painful to read, realizing how a few decisions at distinct moments can have life long impacts.
Not on the DMC YZ but from 6.20 there is some footage of Hicks as mentioned in the article.
