Finally able to ride project RM 144. Curious what others have been running for gear ratios? Currently I have a 12/51 set up and find myself shifting a bunch between 2nd and 3rd. Stock on the bike is 12/49. Wondering what others have been running on any 144. Thank you for any feedback!

This isn’t helpful to your question but how do you find the 144? I’ve been wondering about making my Rm a 144 just for a bit of extra torque but didn’t know how much gain you get over the 125 vs characteristics you may lose.

I ran on my 06 yz144 14/49 was experiencing the same thing with mine when I first did it and stock gearing. Ran it that way for 15 years.

I noticed a difference the first time I was out last week on a smaller indoor track. Would I suggest it? Yes, its worth the money.

So you left the gear ratio stock?

No I changed it to the 14/49 the stock gearing was 13/48 on the yz. By going to taller gearing it made the lower gears more usable less shifting less wheel spin. Made it run like it did as a 125

You need to go up on your counter shaft sprocket to like a 13 maybe even a 14.

I run 13/50 on a mod YZ125 after trying a couple different combos. I feel it gives me the best 2nd/3rd gear usability in corners, I can carry 3rd in more open corners and 2nd is usable in the tight stuff.
I'm 185 without gear on, Vet A.

Hey Ginger, how you get on yesterday?
Eh went ok 6/6 so not ideal. But it was Improved over oatfield. I felt better and was able to have some midpack speed for a lap or two. Just need to ride more 9 times in two years isn’t enough. But improving is good so I’ll take it.

it still rides like a 125, except its easier to get over jumps you struggled with before

When I had my 04 rm 144 I added 1 tooth in the front and 1 in the rear to the stock gearing

I’m running a 11 front on my rm144, I went down one lol, I’m
Also a fat ass riding a 144, it’s not my full time
Bike but I like that gearing cause I never have to use first minus the start, back draw is 2nd and 3rd don’t last very long like really short, then once get to 4th it pulls for decent chunk longer then.

I do have a 12 stock front I should try just to see how it is.

I assume your goal is to be in 3rd more often?

If you are running a shorty silencer, go back to a longer silencer and possibly even try the stock pipe.

You can keep playing around with gearing, but at the end of the day it’s a 125 and frequent shifting is just part of the game.
