I know KTM has a recall on their MX chains and it seems some racers had issues as well. A guy I was riding with last night broke his. CRF450RX. Just bought the chain, 2nd ride on it. So maybe a few hours. Guy is not a super fast rider on the gas all the time. It’s his trail bike. Luckily he didn’t break a case. Don’t think I will be buying a new RK anytime soon.

I have been using RK for over 10 years with no issues…. I ride a lot! I wonder if these are knock off”s?

Are RK what all the race teams with issues have been running too?

Yes, I'm too lazy to look myself Laughing

DID ERT3 is in your future.

Keep them lubed and clean, I swear they are bulletproof.

From what I remember yes, husky is an RK team as well as the FXR Honda team.

Dang, it always seemed like RK was a "gold standard" of chains (along with other brands obviously) but that sure is a lot of broken chains in a short amount of time. Given this thread by a weekend warrior, it stands to reason others have probably had issues as well that nobody has heard about.

Just curious if others were failing. We’ve seen the RK failures in MX/SX and the fact KTM recalled their RK chains on their MX bikes.

Very doubtful. Purchased at Honda dealer, came from Parts Canada I believe.

I have been so far pretty unimpressed with the firepower chains, but you can get one for like 30$!

I just replace them every ten hours or so, but if I buy new sprockets I'll spring for a DID. Easy 20 hrs from DID ert3 on my 250f
*firepower is a rebranded RK

Arent KTM OEM chains made by Regina? At least they were for just about forever on the SX line.

From time to time yes. They also use DID. My 21 TX300 has a DID O ring. I always thought the Regina chains were great.

Yeah that was my recollection. Regina chains on the mx bikes and the offroad models had/have the DID sealed chains.

My 2010 400 XCW had a Regina O ring. Like wheels and other components they change them up often.

That is a rupture from a big overload.

Highly likely a rock has been wedged and caused the sideplate to rupture and the other one to de rivet.

An engineer from the manufacturer would test the hardness on the broken parts to see if it was a heat treat issue and maybe do a spectro test to see if the material was as specified.

Maybe he had a massive hood scoop to ram all the air and that deflected the rock into his chain?

Tried RK in the 90’s and it was a POS. Looks like they haven’t changed much. DID ERT for me.

After all these chain issues i started running the DID520MX it is quite a bit stronger that the DIDERT3. Im sure it is heavier & it is more expensive but MX is dangerous enough without having a chain failure!! i broke a chain in a rhythm section years ago & it was a scary wild ride! You cant put a price on safety

Pretty sure KTM uses Regina chains...unless they changed over.

They use a variety of brands. My 21 has a DID stock.
