RIP Sir. Just a couple of years older than him. The Factory Honda’s back then were something special, and so was he on them.

Yes for sure- his speed on the 250cc also was crazy fast- it actually scared me to watch- as it must have also been on the 125.

it is like a giant cramp. locked up and as said when you are under you gasp. i went under in a frozen creek if it wasn't shallow i may not be here. swim in cold water plenty. been frozen and wet plenty. big difference between cold and deadly.
prayers for the family.

RIP Champ, I was so amazed on how he could handle that big HRC 500, tells you what kind of a man he was, attempting to save a dog. I would do the same thing.

Damn!! That's terrible news. God speed Mr.875. My heart goes out to his family and the GP fans- that's 3 legends from the 80's who have passed now. Gone but never forgotten!!

Terrible news. As someone who grew-up devouring everything he could find about 1980s motocross, Eric's loss at such a young age is a real tragedy.

RIP.

This is 'The Kid' testing the works Cagiva 125 of Dave Strijbos back in 1987. Can't imagine many/any factory riders being allowed to do that sort of thing these days.

Horrible. I remember him saying on TV, "You must have a fighting spirit." He sure did.

RIP.

Anyway here are some videos from the french national channel #1, at the international mx of beaucaire in 89 and 90. (I can"t embed the links either)

These photos and videos are a great tribute to an awesome racer and a brave and selfless man who tried to save his dog...I totally get why he jumped in to save the puppy...I would do the same

I've seen some criticism of Eric online for doing what he did....it's just such a shame he didn't succeed, save the dog ad live to tell the story...I can't imagine how his family and friends must feel right now...horrendous tragedy

What sweet and cute dogs pictured above! Yes, its nasty and terribly sad.

Trying to make something positive out of it though, the tragedy may have alerted other people to the dangers and how to go about jumping in cold water(or not) whilst trying not to immerse the head in the process of doing so. So in a way Erics tragedy and brave actions could have even helped saved other peoples lives in the future who maybe faced with a similar dilemma.

I'd have gone into the water to save the puppy too.

Yea me too- my reaction would be to dive in headfirst as quick as poss, not what you are meant to do it seems. Getting lowered in a quick as possible by someone may have been the method and a lifejacket to keep the head above water. Still reckon I may have dived though, it would be your natural reaction to get in there as quick as possible.
