I guess too much it's when it has an effect on your (or family) life quality. Some peoples go to restaurants and bars and spend 1000$ and barely remember what they did. I never regretted to frankenstein a brand new CRF250R 2014 to fit a CR250 motor in it. It was pure pleasure from the beginning until a sold it because I feel this bike deserved to be ridden not sitting in my garage.

It is hard to say without more details.

For most models of the early 2000's, if more than one is usually available somewhat close by, then spending more to have a better starting point is advisable.

Elbow grease and a couple of rattle cans and you can get a lot done for cheap.

And then sometimes you just do stupid shit and spend more than you plan on.

Built this primo '95 YZ 250 long rod with late model suspension. Bought it for $400.00. Probably put about $1,500.00 into it. (And lots of hours!) That was more than what I had planned but you know how things get carried away! To be honest, it might be a few $$$ more than that, but I really don't want to know for fear of depression. Lol so true. If it wasn't for trying to buy a house and all of that at the time and had the extra money I would have probably got my fork legs coated or just bought a set already done, sent the motor off for some work and a ton of other stuff. But I was and am so restricted with finances it actually worked out well for me. I've got a bitchen bike the way it is and it was rideable in a month Smile

I don't know how much is too much but I feel like my 89 CR125 rebuild was too much.

What i've learned on my YZ125 build, price of the bike was maybe 15-20% of what i've put into it.

I could have done it cheaper, re-used some parts, but i wanted to utilize NOS parts (where it made sense) and have a new bike from the ground up.

Bike maybe will be worth 60% of what i put into it, but it will be cool and wife gave me permission inside our next house Laughing

I could have maybe saved some money by waiting around, but i got a fair deal on a complete bike and it being much nicer i would have still replaced all the plastics, rebuild the motor, suspension, wheels, etc so no benefit in buying a better condition bike, just a complete one.

It can’t be overstated when doing a restore you have another motorcycle to ride. It really helps you to not cut corners since you’re not dependent on it running immediately.
I would not be taking the insane amount of time I am on a 95 CR 250 restore if I did not have another bike.
