It's still sad. Imagine if all top 20 riders were all close competition. It would be great racing.

I think pro riders need to have a serious look at the PBR (the rodeo thing, not the beer). The top riders got together and did their own thing. I saw a thing today that the 50th highest earning rider has earned almost a half million (in prize money) over their careers. If pro bull riders can do it, why not pro moto riders?

I see a lot of similarities in the two sports (bull riding and moto) in terms of sponsor exposure (not a lot of advertising space on a bull rider and none on the bull), perception of the sport from non-participants (it’s crazy...my kid isn’t doing that, sort of thing) and moto could benefit a lot from how those pro bull riders started the PBR and how they’ve marketed it.

Just a thought.

Unfortunately it's the sport we chose. Golf and NASCAR has bigger fan bases, bigger sponsors, and easier spectating. You can't just pull money out of your ass and pay a 20th place pro $60,000. I don't see SX/MX ever getting to that level of sponsorship without huge changes, changes that would take away a lot of the aspects that make dirt bike racing, dirt bike racing.

How much does the beat bowler in the world make? Are bowling comps live on TV?

I think moto is a little bigger than bowling.

Looks like 20th on the money list (assuming like points standing) made approx $46k

Bull riders are smarter than MX riders?

I don't think this sport is nearly as small as people would want you to believe. . .

The fact that a guy who made it into the show let alone pulled a top 20 is doing roofs for income on the side is just pathetic and these guys deserve better. It's just amazing to me that the payout is so pathetic, I can make more money than that at a hillclimb if I do well, a fucking hillclimb, that nobody on earth gives two shits about besides the people there (my ego wants me to believe this isn't true but unfortunately my grasp on reality is relatively solid). I'll gladly pay $2 more for my hangtown ticket every year if it went directly to the payout, and I think pretty much anyone else would be happy to as well.

Plenty of guys that have gotten a top 20th place finish have day jobs to pay their bills. I completely agree that 20th place should pay more than $600, but it’s been this way since day 1. Most people that don’t know, would think that the 20th place rider is making more than that, I’m sure. The entire payout for motocross and SX is horrible.

You're cool, just got to thinking about how the little guy gets shit on so badly in this gig. On top of all the fees they have to come up with, for all their hard work, they usually get parked out where the factory rigs have the bike wash run- off water cascading down the hillside. They deserve better.......

Find a promoter to start a competing national series. It worked for sprint cars. Full time teams get tow money and making the main pays 800 to start. Expenses are outrageous with 60,000 dollar engines, but attendance per night is probably lower for the Outlaws, I think the average race has about 5k attendance .

how many privateers are on the gate? Would it be enough to make the gate look like crap if they weren’t there? Only way to get AMAs attention is to hurt the bottom line.

Unfortunately I’m sure it would be easy to fix from the promoters perspective to get a full get one way or another. Ultimately it would take all the big names to make any sort of changes. Not gonna happen, they are getting paid.

*edit not talking about privateers getting paid. Just overall being treated better

The money has to come from somewhere. Simple as that. Comparing other sports is irrelevant unless you have all the details. The riders could get together and demand all they want, but if the money isn't there who pays them? Davey Coombs isn't running around like Dan Bilzerian and works his ass off personally at every National at Lorettas, not to mention owning Racer X too. All of this complaining about privateers is painful. They choose their profession. If they provide so much value, they should sell themselves to Verizon, Coke, or some other huge sponsor that will pay them to finish 20th. It is the same as saying an auto mechanic is paid enough etc etc. If you don't like your income, do something about it.

Until they bring the price of bikes down, the sport will never grow. Too expensive for anyone who isn’t pulling in serious cash.

Need a riders union or representation. Personally I would like to see all the privateers get together and not race the SX series. Feld would have to change something as would look stupid to have 8 or 9 guys in each heat race. and no one in the LCQ. NBC's ratings would drop for sure.

We have something like that here. It is called MXGP and noone gave a buck about under 25 racers behind the starting gate....

You can't be feeling bad when you swim in that sweet sweet factory money.

Until the riders "sack up" and take control they will never get paid what they are worth. Feld will continue to pocket all the money and everyone outside the top 10 will be broke racers for the most part. Its sad and pushes most privateers out of the sport.

As David vuillemen always says “ if you want to make more money and have a nice factory ride the solution is simple
GO FASTER “
