I know there was a similar ad about yz250s. I can't find a cr250 under $3,000 around my area. I've been on yz's already and want to try out cr's but may go a different route if I can't find one for around 2,000 or less. Are they that popular right now? I remember a couple years ago I could find them for 1500-2000 its ridiculous. For 500-1000 more I can find a newer ktm 250sx. What makes these hondas so special that everyone wants a fortune for?

Just talked to someone about this today. He’s been looking for one, but they are all stupidly priced.

they last. and can be rebuilt many times and be competitive. we have 2-125's, 3-250's and 2-500's with that frame set up. paid a good penny for the 250's and the other ones we have had for a long time.

Not sure about other states, but the 02 is really valuable in California because it's the only two stroke with a modern aluminum frame that is legal for a green sticker. We have some pretty decent riding areas run by the state, and green stickers can ride all year in those parks, red stickers only in the winter.

The 02 and up CRs have really comfortable ergonomics, especially. They are just really easy to move around on and push hard because the bike is so comfortable. The chassis has a really good balance too, so they jump really well (remember all the freestyle MXers who used CR250s?) About the only negative is that they are fastest when set up for top end power, so they can be a handful in dry/slick conditions. IME they're not nearly as fast when set up for low end grunt. Magazines used to rag on em for being slow, but I had one with a FMF SST pipe and 50tooth sprocket and that thing was super fast up top. On well preped dirt that bike was lethal.

Have an 06 and can't bring myself to sell it, the bike handles so damn well. Eric Gorr did some motor work and it's perfect, also turns on a dime.

Bought my 04 in 08 during the 2-strokes suck burn in hell movement with less than 16 hours on it for 1800 bucks. Fast forward to 2016 and people are like, hey wait a minute, 2 strokes aren't that bad afterall and sold it to a guy with 200+ hours and with no rebuild and no bearing changes for $2300 bucks. Had so much fun AND turned a profit 8 years later. Lol

SEC football country is where you want to look. Good friend just picked up an 04 for $1800 a few weeks ago. 6 or so months ago he found Michael Byrnes SX bike, picked it up with all the goodies still on the bike for $1600. 3 are for sale right now on the fb pages down here all 3 under 2200

When these bikes 1st came out they were severely underrated. In the last few yrs. many have found out the potential they have with a few mods. Currently have (3) 3rd gen CR2's in the stable & don't plan on ever selling the 02 I picked up in 05 with 1 hr. of ride time.

I paid 1600 about 4 years ago for a 2002. I wouldnt sell it for anywhere close to that now though. Best handling 250 I've ever owned. Id like to keep this bike forever, but I am kinda worried about the 02 model cylinders being discontinued.

So the fellow Vitard who bought this 2002 from me 7 or so years ago for $2400.00 got a pretty good deal?Smile

Any 02+ 250 2 stroke that isnt a ktm or yz is worth more than 2k. Theyre modern enough to compete but not made anymore. Theyre collectables now.

Were those years the case reed motors ? I've ridden a couple different CR's from that era, they handled great but the motors were underwhelming, at least on the 2 I rode. I'm sure it had to do with the set up, those motors a little more finicky ?

It's not just you. They are often referred to as "dogs" for a reason. With that said, they can be made really fast!

Good gas, good oil. Raise the cylinder (yes a way thicker basegasket) get a pipe that keeps pulling. Sorry no pc no fmf no hgs no dep. Tried them al but a dpr with a pc silencer. Ride agressief and rev the shit out of it. With that still competitieve against any 4 stroke.

05-07 best smoker what is build!!!

The 02 was very "electric" feeling. Smooth and steady pull, no hard hitting power anywhere in the range and didn't rev real far. Felt like a great 250 for a beginner to novice level rider in stock form. Bike handled good, cornered well but felt awfully rigid for my tastes. Was the only aluminum framed bike I have ever owned and ridden other than my son's 04 CRF250.

There are many threads here on Vital on making them run.

Sounds like the powervalve cables were slack. Some people never check the 'RC Valve' then the bike never goes one the pipe.

It's weird, I just don't see a lot of CR250's for sell around here, and when you do, they're usually 99'-01's. As far as YZ250 prices, I just saw a clean 02' for $2500. I've seen some roached 02'-04's for the low 2000's. I paid $1900 for my (really clean) 02' back in 14'. Based on the market right now, I could easily get $2500 for it. Other than routine maintenance, the only thing I've done to it is a set of wheels, a new seat cover, and graphics. It's the only time in my life that any "toy" that I've bought has increased in value.

I'm not selling it though, I've got two 4-strokes for sale right now, but I'm keeping the YZ.

Love my 02, but not stock. With the engine mods it’s no slouch. Unfortunately the rider is...lol

By changing the port timing & head mods on these engines it reallly wakes them up. In 05 I had PC do an 03 Cyl / head for $300 that turned out to be the best money spent to date. It's a completely different powerband afterwards that feels more like the older style 92-01 HPP engine, but on steroids.

My 06 just sets in the garage. Went threw the whole bike last year updating and adding some parts. Always said I would never sell the bike unless someone offered me something I couldn’t turn down. Honestly don’t think I could ever part with it.

I sold a primo 2002 cr 250 for $2,200 in I think 2006. It blows my mind what they go for now. That was the worst bike I've ever ridden. The sad thing is that my 2007 250xc with brand new crank and top end wouldn't even bring in $3k

I had an '02 with an Eric Gorr modded motor and an '03 with a stock cylinder and head. There was a huge difference in the mid to top but nothing woke up the low end. I'll never get another one. I am too slow to ride a 250 like a 125, which is what you need to do with these bikes.

No disrespect to EG, but I don't believe he had good engine specs for these bikes. Other tuners like PC or Varner had a dyno with R&D to develop good engine specs. I've ridden a couple of bikes with EG mods & wasn't impressed. One bike felt like it lost topend power & the other had minimal lowend gains.

From what I recall reading back in the day, these bikes have too large of a crank case volume to produce much bottom end, so you need to get the 'cases stuffed' to noticeably improve bottom end.

I had an 02 with mild port work from the original owner and an SST pipe and that thing hit hard in the midrange and revved really far on top. I rode a few over the years with 'all around power' setups and 'bottom end' setups and they definitely had more pull off the bottom, but they stopped pulling in the midrange and had zero overrev. The torque setups worked okay on hardpack, or for singletrack, but my bike was way way faster on tracks that got disked deep and fire roads. High RPM setup and a 50 tooth rear sprocket IMO is the best setup on these bikes for track riding.

You don't need to stuff the cases to get good lowend power out of these engines. There was an article a while back in the mid 2000's that compared the Honda CCV to the KTM case reed engine if I recall. Looked for the mx article, but couldn't find it. The CR was within a few % of the KTM engine. Honda seemed to have missed the mark on the port timing as well as the head specs from the OEM.

Comparing apples to apples I had an 04 YZ250 back in the day that had PC engine mods as well. In comparison to the 03 CR2 with PC mods (no case work) the lowend power was close with a Doma exhaust. The difference was in the mid-top where the CR would out power the YZ. Especially up top where the CR would keep pulling the YZ would fall off.

Just picked up an 07 CR2 that has Chad Watts engine mods with out no bottom case work done. The previous owner is stating the bike pulls off idle into a healthy topend power. Over the summer I was going to have Varner do an 06 CR engine & after speaking to him he also doesn't do any mods to the bottom cases.

Not the article I referenced, but it's off a mx forum site where they talk about port timing. Even EG chimed in about it. http://dirtrider.net/forums3/threads/case-reed-engines-and-torque.30581/

Do you have to run race gas with these mods?

Depending on what you're looking for. If you want a high output engine then it will require race fuel. Both PC & Varner can reshape the head to run on pump fuel as an option.
As a side note. In my case I don't have good pump fuel in the area & my 02+ 2t's with stock engines don't run good (detonate) on pump fuel. They need to be run 50/50 with a higher octane fuel like VP C12.

Amen to that. So true.
