I know there was a similar ad about yz250s. I can't find a cr250 under $3,000 around my area. I've been on yz's already and want to try out cr's but may go a different route if I can't find one for around 2,000 or less. Are they that popular right now? I remember a couple years ago I could find them for 1500-2000 its ridiculous. For 500-1000 more I can find a newer ktm 250sx. What makes these hondas so special that everyone wants a fortune for?
The 02 and up CRs have really comfortable ergonomics, especially. They are just really easy to move around on and push hard because the bike is so comfortable. The chassis has a really good balance too, so they jump really well (remember all the freestyle MXers who used CR250s?) About the only negative is that they are fastest when set up for top end power, so they can be a handful in dry/slick conditions. IME they're not nearly as fast when set up for low end grunt. Magazines used to rag on em for being slow, but I had one with a FMF SST pipe and 50tooth sprocket and that thing was super fast up top. On well preped dirt that bike was lethal.
The Shop
05-07 best smoker what is build!!!
There are many threads here on Vital on making them run.
I'm not selling it though, I've got two 4-strokes for sale right now, but I'm keeping the YZ.
Pit Row
I had an 02 with mild port work from the original owner and an SST pipe and that thing hit hard in the midrange and revved really far on top. I rode a few over the years with 'all around power' setups and 'bottom end' setups and they definitely had more pull off the bottom, but they stopped pulling in the midrange and had zero overrev. The torque setups worked okay on hardpack, or for singletrack, but my bike was way way faster on tracks that got disked deep and fire roads. High RPM setup and a 50 tooth rear sprocket IMO is the best setup on these bikes for track riding.
Comparing apples to apples I had an 04 YZ250 back in the day that had PC engine mods as well. In comparison to the 03 CR2 with PC mods (no case work) the lowend power was close with a Doma exhaust. The difference was in the mid-top where the CR would out power the YZ. Especially up top where the CR would keep pulling the YZ would fall off.
Just picked up an 07 CR2 that has Chad Watts engine mods with out no bottom case work done. The previous owner is stating the bike pulls off idle into a healthy topend power. Over the summer I was going to have Varner do an 06 CR engine & after speaking to him he also doesn't do any mods to the bottom cases.
Not the article I referenced, but it's off a mx forum site where they talk about port timing. Even EG chimed in about it. http://dirtrider.net/forums3/threads/case-reed-engines-and-torque.30581/
As a side note. In my case I don't have good pump fuel in the area & my 02+ 2t's with stock engines don't run good (detonate) on pump fuel. They need to be run 50/50 with a higher octane fuel like VP C12.
