Hoping to get some feedback on dealing with some post concussion symptoms. I took a pretty good digger a little over a month ago. Been having a frustrating time dealing with some of the post concussion symptoms.

Nothing showed up on the scan but Doc thinks I dislodged/damaged my inner ear which controls balance. Been haveing some annoying balance issues. Although it hasn't prevented me from carrying on with my normal life it's pretty annoying not feeling physically on point/ normal. I started doing some balance rehab exercises that have improved things but the progress seems slow.

Hoping to get some feedback from others that have gone through similar issues. I try not to complain around my family dont want to worry them. Been keeping this bottled up for a while. Thanks

You need to go see an ENT. Ear nose Throat. They have certain doctors that specialize in balance from ear related issues.

After a crash, had the scan and everything checked out ok. A few days after, I woke up in the morning and everything was spinning. Vertigo. Went to an ear specialist and he said I’d likely moved around some small ball like things in my ear associated with balance. I was given some head movement exercises to do, to try shift everything back in place. I’m not gunna lie, it took months to feel right again. Damn it was awful feeling dizzy everyday.

I know exactly what you are talking about because after my accident and 25 days in the hospital with dizzying after laying in bed I had the same thing. When I went and had my hearing checked the lady Said at a previous office she had worked at she used to be able to cure it but at this new job she could not do it right then like she used to but I could make an appointment to come back have it done.

A few years ago my wife had Vertigo for about a month and well it is strange but easy to fix and it is the same issue and for me it cured it. All it took was laying with your head hanging on an angle off the end of the bed and doing some movements and rotation and sitting up.

I was skeptical but did as my wife instructed and in about 5 minutes the dizziness was 99% gone. After a day or 2 it was 100% gone. I was amazed something this simple could cure what the Dr wanted me to wait weeks to get in and pay for.

Google ear crystals and there are a bunch of videos that show you exactly wat to do.

Watch this video and it covers it. https://youtu.be/9SLm76jQg3g

Thanks Lumpy, I have done the Epley maneuver a few times. It has helped but not cured it.

I would have someone help you do it several more times over multiple days. More than 1 crystal could be out of joint

Just finished it. Great listen. I’ve said it time and time again and have even had threads deleted over this, professional MX/SX is the WORST when acknowledging concussions and having an actual protocol in place when dealing with a injuried pro rider.

Concussions are a strange and scary issue, my advice is don't hide your symptoms from your close family. People close to you will be the first to spot any changes in your behavior (stuff you might not be aware of). I would recommend finding a Neurologist, not a regular doctor but a doctor who focuses specifically on the brain and concussion related issues. Be patient, everyone responds different when being concussed. It takes time, sleep and hydration to recover and while some people recover quickly others take much longer. Make sure you are completely recovered before putting yourself at risk for another concussion, I know it sucks but your long term health is more important than getting back on the track. For me this is one of the most difficult thing about head injuries, the waiting....

I am not a doctor and am only speaking from my personal experience and research. Good luck!

Thanks Chris. Great advice, and well taken. Definitely not getting on the bike anytime soon. Have way too much to lose career wise by not making a full recovery. It's been slow progress that has not been exactly linear like I would expect with a normal injury. Good days and off days. I think that part of it has frustrated me more than anything. Thanks again.

Definitely not playing Dr, but how much of a bell ringer was it? Were you out cold and lose consciousness? Did you wake up in the hospital 2 hrs. later or was it less severe? I would imagine it makes a difference.

Never lost conciousness. Got up right away after I went down. Remember everything about the accident and that day. Just felt pretty dazed for about 2 days. Most of these symptoms occured about a week later. Was advised it's called "Post concussion syndrome". No memory loss whatsoever. Its all been issues wth injuring my vestibular system (balance). It's minor but has lingered and is very annoying.

Logic tells us this matters, but the human brain is so complicated. Sometimes it doesn’t matter, but the good news is concussion treatment is getting better by leaps and bounds these days.

Take the time to heal up for sure. I've been lucky to never have a major concussion. However if I'm reading your username correctly - I'm going to guess we have a mutual occupation. You can't be too careful as I'm sure you're aware. My minor one definitely made me do some thinking concerning the risks I'm willing to take while riding. Heal up soon, and good luck!

I had a similar trauma were I felt dizzy all the time. Actually time is the best cure! Try to do different sports that won't be risky to your head but will encourage balance control (surfing or other board sports, trail running, gym specific training, etc) which will allow you brain to reset and gain control again.

+Ginger is a natural solution! Blend it with some fruits daily and it will help a lot!!

Find a quality Chiropractor and you will be better in no time. Its what i do and thats how Sidney Crosby finally made it back to the NHL after a year ticking around with the MDs. Contact me if you need help. Dr. Rick 609-325-1959 taxesuckk@gmail.com Good luck

Vertigo is no joke. I have it on a daily basis. The head exercises work, you just have to keep doing them, multiple times per day until you get that crystallized debris out of that part of the ear. Most often it just goes dormant and can be good for months, then one day you wake up and bam it's back, or you bend over inverting your head an wham you feel dizzy.

This is much like the other video - try both see what works for you. Keep in mind most times you feel mostly better, but not 100%. 100% takes a few days or weeks or months.

Yup. I dealt with it for a summer in 2000 I believe. Crashed practicing and hit my head sideways. Just slapped it down from the side hard. Had a splitting headache for a couple days and then the vertigo and such started. It sucked. Took almost a year to go away. Lights bothered me, turning my head too fast would get things spinning. Trouble focusing, etc. It sucked. But, as many have said, communicate with the important people around you.

Concussion's are definitely nothing to mess around with. I have had a few , but my worst one was in 95' I think. The first 10-14 days I felt dizzy and nauseous a lot. I remember walking down my hallway having to hold onto the walls because I couldn't focus on anything. " Punch drunk " is basically what the doctor said. I think it took a good 4 - 5 months before I actually felt normal.

On another note : I do remember another time where I was out for probably 2 minutes. The weird thing is , I felt fine after just a few days. The real bad one , I think I was only out for 10 seconds? And it took months.

To the OP......don't rush anything! Let your brain heal correctly , no matter how long it takes.

I hate to see people going through issues like these that are fundamental to everyday life. I have had a few of my own. I didn't expect the rapid change in mood the day after I got knocked out. Literally everything pissed me off like the worst hangover of my life.
(That was the time I was so racked up my GF was lifting my head to pour water down my throat the next day- gnarly.)
I guess that's why I spend $500+ on a helmet now.

I requested that the site have a medical section numerous times . We all have similar injuries in someway or another .

Anyway, I had same issues after a concussion, I will give specifics after wasting time with multiple general practioners I finally got to a sports doc that worked with althletes primarily. He used this formula to get me literally out of bed after two months. My symptoms were fatigue and dizziness and poor concentration. He prescribed the following :
Amantadine, Methylphenidate and Clonazepam. My primary GP was like “huh”.

This was May 2018’ that I started the above medication, in two weeks I was off the couch and back working and was lucky to race the amateur day at Washougal national July, 2018’. 95 % recovered and off those meds as of last month.

With Chris Cooksey’s previous post and video about his concussions battles, I have had similiar challenges and I am pursuing the TMS Therapy to get fully 100% back maybe. Thanks for that Chris.

I got knocked out racing a couple months ago, don't remember the crash or anything else for about 8 hours. I felt like I was drunk for the next 2 weeks. Even had someone comment the day after that i was talking funny.
I would say it took at least a month to feel normal going about day to day life but stayed off the bike for around 2 months. Had a race today and felt great, hopefully you kick these symptoms soon

The ENT told me I have chronic Vertigo. The head exercises work a little but not all the time, it’s pretty frustrating. Definitely affects some of the things I like to do..........Hope you get better soon!

Dale Earhart jr wrote an entire book on his experience with concussions and how he’s been treating his post concussion symptoms with therapy. Also the full interview is amazing if you have the time, but he does go over some exercises he still does to help with his past Brain trauma

Concussion talk starts at 40:30 I’m trying to figure out how to get it to autostart there

Find a doctor/physical therapist certified in craniosacral therapy. It works wonders for post concussion symptoms.

I had a similar thing happen to me in March. I whiskey throttled over a jump, completely overshot the landing and landed into the face of the next jump. My body curled up, chin smacked the crossbar, and then my body recoiled back the other direction. I never crashed. As soon as I gathered myself up and rolled off the track I was overcome by this dizziness that made me feel like I had just spent the last five hours slamming beers in the bar. Loaded up my stuff and headed home. The next day I really didn't feel that out of whack but over the course of the next couple days I had crazy headaches, dizziness, balance issues, sensitivity to light and sounds, etc. I went to my doctor and he gave me muscle relaxers for my neck and vertigo pills, all while saying to come back within the week if all this persists. Long story short I decided to wait out my symptoms, as a rider for over 20 years (like most of us probably) I've had my fair share of bumps to the head and symptoms always had gone away within a week or two. Well not this time, I spent my whole summer going to chiropractors and doctors hoping to get help, while the chiropractor visits seemed to help it wasn't the answer for me. With my situation any type of physical exertion I did would make the following 2-5 days an absolute living hell. I'm an electrician by trade, so I do a lot of moving around throughout the course of the day, and if I decided to go for a bicycle ride after work one day the next day couple days would feel like I was drunk, I'd stumble around hoping no one would actually think I was drunk. Eventually I started looking into concussion clinics hoping my issues could be solved by someone within that realm of medical expertise... After a couple phone calls to some pretty big hospitals in Michigan with the same bullshit response "our clinic is only intended for players trying to get back into the game", I found Dr. Jeff Kutcher's clinic in Brighton two weeks ago. I was told that my post concussion syndrome symptoms are most likely from going from being an active person to sitting on the couch waiting out my issues. I was given a list of vitamins to take and prescribed a few things and I have since been sent to physical therapy for my neck and vestibular issues. While all my issues are still ongoing, but not near as bad, if I can give you any advice it's to seek help and be persistent about it until you fix yourself. It took me eight months to find someone that could give me a direction to head with hopes of feeling good again. Good luck!

I have been on Amantadine and Ritalin for 16 months and am reducing Amatadine to 1 pill a day till stopping after the 1st of the year. It does work.

Thank you everyone for sharing your ways to try and get over this. Some great information being shared

Get a neurologist, a good Chiro who specializes in upper cervical and a good manual therapist. Conventional docs are close to useless when it comes to concussions. Whiplash goes hand in hand with concussions.
Find some good help now and educate yourself quickly. This is a hole I have been slowly climbing out of after 6 years and I don’t think I will ever fully recover. TBI is a serious subject.

My new GF just got one when her airbags deployed last week. ER staff and docs were useless. Tried to diagnose as a serious concussion and send her home. No Neuro referral, no concussion protocol, absolutely useless.
