This is my ride, 2011 Cannondale Trail SL2 29er. I picked this up as a left over for around $900. Went to the bike shop with the intentions of just picking up something in the 500-600 range but after test rides I settled on this. Wanted something to just get a little more active during the week. Of course once I found some local trails, I was hooked and a year after purchasing I went on an upgrade mission and built this up. Only stock parts are the frame, handlebars and brake levers/calipers.

Looks like as good as the 711 was on a moto, he might be even better on a bicycle!

Everybody wants a 27.5 now, but I still think 29 is the way to go.

I'd specify that for XC, 29 is the way to go. If you come from a dh/jumping background like myself and have a bike that can do 20 mile trail rides or dh trails/jump lines then I'd recommend 27.5 for sure. My Intense Tracer275 is pretty damn perfect if you don't care about setting xc records.

Not that good on the flat sections with alot pedaling, but pretty rad on the steep downhills and big jumps Tongue

Yeah if I were to buy again right now I would love a Trek Slash or a Giant Rein. I have ridden a 29er and it was nice but I have never ridden a 27.5. This post makes me want to go blow the dust off my MTB and go riding.

I was opening up this thread again to post a picture of the new mountain bike I got, but I never saw this question, so sorry about that! There are a ton of great places within an hour. What kind of riding are you looking to do?

As someone who just got off a Reign X I wouldnt recommend it..

Pretty old school geo compared to the new bikes....short top tube + high bb sucks....Mine was dialed with a new Pike, carbon wheels and an angleset to get the headangle down to 66deg..

I liked it and was able to pin it but once you get on a bike thats not so cramped its a game changer..

Ignore that marketing BS. 29ers suck at lots of things, namely manualing and tight turns, two of the most funs things in mountain biking. I have a 27.5 now and I do like it a lot, but it's really not that different.

Finally chiming in, last year's dh bike is gone, that frame is collecting dust because of a broken wrist. My gear room is a mess.

26, 27.5 and 29 are all good bikes, just depends on what your looking for. They all do certain things better than each other.

Without question. I might even get a 29er one of these days, if I ever lose my mind and decide to race something with uphills again:-). A lot depends on your dimensions and where you are riding too. A big part of me wishes that wheel size can-o-worms hadn't been opened though, such a pain in the ass for those of us with big piles of 26" tires and wheels. At least the specialized butcher tire is available in 27.5 now, that has suppressed my hate a bit. It also killed the resale value of great 26" bikes, since every internexpert is screaming 29 at the top of their lungs. Mountain bikers buy into trends like a bunch of 12 year old girls, and don't think the industry hasn't noticed.

The wheel size debate is very similar to the 4-stroke / 2-stroke train wreck argument.

I went with a 29r (Yeti SB 95) this year just to give it a try and so far, it is freakin' awesome. I had a couple Giant Reigns previous to this: a '10 and a '13 - both were great. The '10 I was able to sell in one hour, but the '13 took a lot longer (the 27.5" thing ruined the value).

I setup my 95 with a 140mm fork, 50mm stem, wide bars, aggressive tires, and it bombs anything. I really don't feel at a disadvantage at all in the areas where they are supposed to suffer; it's agile and does great everywhere.

I climb a lot (80k feet so far this year), but I want to go as fast as I can downhill, and this bike gets the job done really well.

Here are a couple photos from today:

I got this in '99 and rode it for 6 years... I still miss it.

EDIT: Before we chopped the seat-post.
