Saw this bike driving to work today, guy is asking $600 for it. He says it needs new piston / ring, but if worst case scenario it would need crank / transmission work what would you estimate it would cost to get this thing back ripping? First thing I noticed was the spark plug out, and the oil cap is missing. I think I could get it from him for $400-500. Also my ex room mate has a nice mx shop locally so I would get all the parts discounted fairly well I'm sure. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance all vital members.

do it, looks like the makings of a good project bike, but for 1500 bucks you could have a nicer one that you dont have to mess with, i'd try to get it for a little cheaper, id try for like 400 or something bc it looks pretty beat, plain to him that the repairs are going to cost more than he's asking this includes like tires/engine work/etc

Looks like a 99-02, I had a 99 and it was a great bike with a nice wide powerband and usable suspension.
If you can put a plug back in you can get a feel for if it is just low on compression or if the crank is totally destroyed. Old two stroke cranks live a surprisingly long time though.
Until you get the gunk off and really see what little details are stripped out, what's leaking, what's been half-assed you won't really know. But for $400-500 you can't go wrong, just don't be surprised if you end up with at least $1,500 in it by the time it's in good shape. Good luck and keep us posted!

Take a couple tools with you and pull the seat off. Then, IF there is an air filter in it, remove that too and check the intake tract for dirt.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. What year is it BTW?
You better'd be prepared on having to do more than piston and rings on it though. That thing looks like it's been "rode hard and put away wet'
What you make of it is what you put into it

I can never find deals like that! I had a 99 KX250 and liked it too. I'd buy it $400-$500...

Dumb question here but should it be able to go into netural / 1st / 2nd gear if its only piston / ring?

Needing a new piston should have nothing to do with the tranny shifting. As long as the motor is not locked up that is.

You said the oil fill cap is missing. Has it been stored outside? If so you may have water/rust in the gearbox. Same with the spark plug being out, you never know what may be inside the cylinder if it has been out in the weather.

Yea i was thinking exactly the same thing. It might have been out in the weather, idk.. I just sold my 2009 KX 250f so I'm bikeless and the weather is beautiful today haha. So I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on it. If I can get it for $400 its mine. Smile

That roached of a bike will need wheel/linkage bearings, too. You could probably have the whole thing rebuilt for a grand if you do the work yourself.

Just see if it has compression. If it doesn't, then offer him less. If he won't take less, then hold off. There are better deals out there.

They didn't have AOS forks in 02.

I'd run, not walk away from that thing, should have bought newmann's that he had for sale. Just my opinion.

It still sits in the garage under a sheet. Hoarders don't try real hard to sell stuff. If it goes it goes, if it stays.....well that's ok too.LOL

What does a cylinder cost for those? I know you cannot bore them and they are worthless if the plating is damaged. For $400 you could always sell the parts on eBay and make your money back twice. It looks like it's no older than '99.

I had a 2001 KX250...two things that I did to make the motor a 4-stroke killer(at the time)...
1. V-Force 2 reed block
2.FMF SST pipe/silencer combo

These two things woke that bike up and I would kill 4-strokes on the Glen Helen dragstrip start to Talladega.

For a very reasonable price, Millenium Technologies will blast that cylinder clean, strip the old plating, repair /weld up any scratches, nicks, gouges or other damage , bore, relieve exhaust bridges, chamfer ports, replate and hone to match your new piston. No need to buy a new cylinder. Absolute perfection every single time I've sent one in. Quick turnaround time also. Got a grenaded four stroke? Not only can the repair the cylinder or big bore and replate, they can also repair that head that the valve broke off in. Amazing quality.

its amazing what that combo will do today even when you compare how much $$ you will spend and still get a reliable fast bike and they are literally bolt-ons..not "install-ons" ala cams or high comp pistons!!!

For comparison: I picked up a GasGas 300cc enduro basket case a little over a year ago. The cases were split and all the parts dumped into a box. I was living in California at the time and as we know, GasGas is not a common brand in the USA. Nevertheless I was able to get it all fixed up for roughly $2100 (+initial cost). I needed two gears, a shift fork, all new case bearings, and a top-end kit. I left the crank alone. I also did some work to the chassis (seals, linkage, etc).

In my opinion, if you buy this KX250 for $500 and give yourself a $2k budget on top of it, you will have yourself almost a brand new 2-stroke.
