Saw this bike driving to work today, guy is asking $600 for it. He says it needs new piston / ring, but if worst case scenario it would need crank / transmission work what would you estimate it would cost to get this thing back ripping? First thing I noticed was the spark plug out, and the oil cap is missing. I think I could get it from him for $400-500. Also my ex room mate has a nice mx shop locally so I would get all the parts discounted fairly well I'm sure. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance all vital members.
If you can put a plug back in you can get a feel for if it is just low on compression or if the crank is totally destroyed. Old two stroke cranks live a surprisingly long time though.
Until you get the gunk off and really see what little details are stripped out, what's leaking, what's been half-assed you won't really know. But for $400-500 you can't go wrong, just don't be surprised if you end up with at least $1,500 in it by the time it's in good shape. Good luck and keep us posted!
You better'd be prepared on having to do more than piston and rings on it though. That thing looks like it's been "rode hard and put away wet'
What you make of it is what you put into it
The Shop
You said the oil fill cap is missing. Has it been stored outside? If so you may have water/rust in the gearbox. Same with the spark plug being out, you never know what may be inside the cylinder if it has been out in the weather.
I'd run, not walk away from that thing, should have bought newmann's that he had for sale. Just my opinion.
Pit Row
1. V-Force 2 reed block
2.FMF SST pipe/silencer combo
These two things woke that bike up and I would kill 4-strokes on the Glen Helen dragstrip start to Talladega.

In my opinion, if you buy this KX250 for $500 and give yourself a $2k budget on top of it, you will have yourself almost a brand new 2-stroke.
