Could someone explain why having a hat/cap on is disrespectful?

Aside from pulling your pants off and showing people your dick during the anthem, I see no normal garment creating a disturbance or impeding the event unless the hat has lights and speakers on it.

I've had this conversation with my in-laws before, where they think that hats should be removed during dinner. I asked them if ladies should have to remove bows from their hair? I always stand and take my hat off during the anthem, but I don't get what the big hang up is on hats off..... Standing at attention with or without a hat should suffice.

Like most things, its so skewed and manipulated from the origin, it just becomes something totally new. I did learn that its US law to take a hat off for none military male citizens during the anthem, but "no penalty listed for failure to comply"

Interesting. Thanks.

I think the OP's point is largely being missed. The assumption is that the ME lady couldn't give a shit less about America. . . and for those who feel that way, Rosebud, you included, why do you stay in America? You want a socialistic utopia, and if that is what you want, why don't you simply move somewhere that already has those values?
I would move to Canada if the process wasn't such a pain in the ass..

God bless those Canadians ( and that lovely slice of heaven they call Whistler)..

I remember back in the late 1970's he had a guitar that would shoot sky rockets out of it during KISS performances.
Here s one of him shooting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqwdl1CpWhI Watch at about 6minutes in.

Saw this on Facebook so thought I would repost.

From Lacey Zarnetski Hill - "I don't usually post my opinion on this subject, but this infuriated me. I'll begin by saying that I don't treat people differently according to their appearance. I had a very friendly chat with and helped a Muslim couple find a specific toy in Target a couple weeks ago while we were shopping. I had no reason to treat them with any disrespect. With that being said, I'll make my point. Why would you choose to live in a country that you have no respect for? This was last night at the AMA Supercross in Dallas, Tx. Before the races began they, as they always do, did a great tribute of respect to our flag and those who serve our country. Every person stood and removed their hats in honor, as you can see. The whole time, this lady sat in her chair and played on her phone without showing any acknowledgement towards the thousands of people around her standing at attention. My husband, myself, and other Americans around us were offended at the lack of respect this woman showed towards the country she lives in. So my question is - Why live in America and reap the benefits of living in this great country if you have zero respect for the country and for those who serve it?"

Looks like she is enjoying the freedoms of the country she is in, and perhaps lives in and was born in. It appears you wish to deny her the very thing that makes this country so great…freedom! If a person denies anyone freedom, one can argue that person isn’t respecting this country and what it stands for. Furthermore, it can be argued that person is less American than this lady and her son who are enjoying a peaceful bonding moment pre supercross gate drop. What’s more American than that? Are you assuming that this lady doesn’t respect this country or it’s military?...are you equating sitting during the Star Spangled Banner as such? Do you think respect for this country is contingent on the compulsory actions of stopping everything you do, standing, removing your hat, facing a flag and placing your hand over your heart every time you hear the Star Spangled Banner? As long as she isn’t creating an active distraction by talking out loud or jumping around, I don’t see anything wrong here. If you’re so supportive of the troops, standing tall and all, surely you didn’t vote republican, right?…you know, the party of “Hawks” that are quick to start a war and quicker to vote down bills benefitting veterans!http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/10/23/1249904/-GOP-s-actual-track-record-on-supporting-veterans Good thing you didn’t intimidate, threaten or make any disparaging remarks out loud towards that lady and her son. For some reason I feel like I need to tell you that these are all rhetorical questions that don’t require answering. I “think” I know the answers to all of them…although, that would mean I’m assuming, and you know what they say about that!

I never understood what the military has to do with sporting events in the first place..
for that matter why even play the national anthem?

And why do the uniformed flag trotters need to be present? Its a sporting event.. I always felt, "ugh, why am i pretending to be so patriotic when i am so far from it"? what does this have to do with SX, shit half the riders are from France, HA

I guess i see her point.. But in Texas?, wow that's pretty ballsy.. Luckily she wasn't flogged or drug behind a dually , (which might be legal in Texas).

The military is there to properly display the flag of the United States of America, and to ensure that the proper protocols are followed with regard to the display of that flag, along with what it represents. We honor our flag, as it represents our freedom and the rights and privileges we enjoy as American citizens. Not only that, but the "uniformed flag trotters" as you refer to them, are people who have volunteered to lay down their lives if need be, to protect the freedoms we hold so dear as citizens of the United States of America. I am not a member of the U.S. armed forces...I am a volunteer firefighter and EMT. I do not merely remove my cap when the national anthem is performed or played. I salute my flag, because I honor the principles it represents, and I honor my daughter, who has enlisted in the armed forces, because she believes service to one's country is an honorable pursuit.
I love the opening ceremonies with the flag presentation and National Anthem. Always have always will

What I don't really care for are the religious folks holding up signs (and I'm a Christian) outside SX races but that's their right so have to flow with it.

Freedom of speech my ass, without the people carrying that flag down there you wouldn't have freedom of anything! How hard is it to stand up and show a little respect toward the military that keeps you safe and the country that provides so much for you? If you don't feel the need to do so, please feel FREE to leave whenever the hell you want, believe me we won't miss you. What a massive slap in the face to the people who gave their lives for your freedom, unreal.

The fact that there is even a discussion about whether standing and showing respect is necessary is scary to me, the fact that the genius above is turning it into a partisan debate is straight up disturbing. . .

People just get so "offended" these days.

Do what YOU think is necessary, and give others the room to make their own decisions.

The person who took the picture was being just as "disrespectful" as the person in the photo, right?

No freedom of speech?...spoken like a true un-American. It's a kind gesture to show your support for our troops by standing...but at the same time that you wish to strip away someones right to freedom? Really? I choose to support our troops through policy....you know, real life things that actually help them physically, mentally and financially. Things like education, employment, student loans, business loans, healthcare etc. Everything that one political party has voted against! Believe me, I don't like to say that anymore than you like to hear it; talk about "unreal." Nobody in this thread made this a partisan issue....although I did report about my observation of it above. Everyone should support our troops, unfortuntely one party does not support our troops so much; that's who made this partisan. Just a suggestion; you shouldn't let people practicing their freedoms scare you....but fear DOES seem to be the American way these days. To each his own...and to that I say, what a beautiful country this is!!

American citizen here living in the Philippines for the last 4 years. Before the races here they usually play the national anthem and the custom is similar to the US to stand and place your right hand over your heart. I always stand and remove my hat to show respect but don't put my hand over my heart, I save that for US national anthem.

What's really amazing is that my standing and removing my hat shames a lot of young locals into doing the same, otherwise they would have just sat there and bullshitted throughout.

I never said no freedom of speech, just that showing a blatant lack of respect for those who provide such freedom to you is a really crappy way to practice it. It really isn't that hard to understand, you look for any possible way to justify someone's actions and in doing so we lose the values that make us who we are. Maybe I was just raised different, I wouldn't even think of sitting down or keeping a hat on during the anthem of whatever country I was in, and it's sad to me to think that anyone would act differently. If everyone just showed a little more respect the world would be a much better place, but instead we justify the disrespectful actions of others rather than condemn them. I highly doubt that a representative of either party would support actions like this, so please stfu with the anti Republican bs, I don't care what party you are from so I don't know why you care which I'm from, it's irrelevant. I guess if you don't feel the need to respect our troops and our anthem then don't go to any events in which they are present or the anthem is played, pretty simple.

Freedom of speech might allow someone to do that by law, but it doesn't stop society as a whole condemning their actions and letting them know how big of an ass they are, or protect them from an accidental beer spilling.Whistling

I only got to the part where you blamed me for losing your values (interesting stretch)....then I did see that last line where you threaten to spill beer on people while whistling (why am I not surprised that is your beverage of choice at a supercross?). That was enough to let me know that I didn't miss anything meaningful in between. I'm sorry you have such little respect for what makes this country so great...but that's your right and unlike you, I would never try to take away any of your rights or ridicule you for enjoying them. So go ahead and support our troops and country by standing tall!

Which is better, 100 people standing because they have to, or one person standing because they chose to.

If you believe everybody SHOULD stand you miss the point of why you are standing.

Tell that to the Native Americans.

Just like back then, just like now, force is used to remove any perceived threat. Freedom has nothing to do with America.
