Ping rides old Crf450r

I find it really interesting what Ping says about the old Honda, that its really close to a new bike. i know that many of you guys have ridden the 06-08 honda 450 and do you feel the same way he does or is he just put under pressure and have to say its close to a 10 year newer bike. Maby i should buy one my self and see what they are all about, they are dirt cheap now days.

my buddy thinks it handles better than his 16 ktm 450
and i think my 17 kx450 is as good as it, not better

Exactly

5-600 bucks will not even touch all the issues on a ten year old four stroke.

He's not wrong about older bikes performing well though. My 14 year old KX 125 is still competitive in the tiddler class.

I love my '08! Factory Connection suspension and link, I really can't imagine a bike being any better for me.

How much you think they spent? Complete engine (stock rebuild), revalved suspension and bigger brakes, there was nothing trick on that bike. Everything else was just decoration and the original stock parts would do just as well.

The best think about it it was no where even close to set up for Ping and he was still impressed with it.

so what if it was restored. that bike was overhauled to be as good as a stock 2006 crf could be. its an apples to apples comparo vs a 18 model. i would bet if they took lap times the 18 wouldnt be substantially faster than that 06.

Had a 05, 06, 07 and two 08s before getting a new 12. The 08 feels like an absolute tractor compared to the 12 in every way. Handling, weight, power delivery.
Full ohlins set up, Hinson 6 spring and akrapovic pipe on the 12, I haven't found anything yet that comes close.

I think my 08 CRF 450 was my favorite bike I have ever raced. I love the power and the way they handled.

Yeah $500-600 would get you all set up with a stock engine rebuild using cheap parts from a value based mechanic, add in the carb overhaul, air filters, chassis bearings, suspension overhaul, new plastics, graphics, bars and grips, Works Connection lever set!!!!! new shifter and brake pedal, cables, chain and sprockets, wheel bearings, tires, possible wheel respoking $$$$$????

but the idea is definitely good if you can pick up a good used example, not blowded up yet lol, and can do a fair chuck of the work yourself.
I know how much work and money I put into this quick flip rebuild and it is nowhere near the above list and I was able to reuse quite a bit of original parts on the bike already.

The wrench rabbit kit is $765 on RM. But, that DOES NOT include valve train parts.So you are into the engine for at least $1k before you even touch the worn out clutch components. PLUS labor (if you cannot do the work).

$1k Engine

Quick cart on RM including

Cheap wheel bearings
Cheap sprockets with o-ring chain
Carb kit
Oil Filter
Oil
Air filter
All suspension bearings
Dunlop tires
Grips
Cheap Levers
Basic cables

About $550 worth and that does not take into account if the clutch or wheels are bad.

Suspension revalves always cost about $800 when shipping and all that is tallied.

That money does not even touch cosmetics either.....

So you are at $2350 right there, and you could throw wheels and a full clutch on top of that. Now I know everything does not need to be replaced, but when you buy a ten year old bike, your receipts tally up quick.

That thing had Tusk wheels, brakes, sprockets and chain, tires, bars. Right there is over $1,000. Plus engine build and whatever misc stuff I bet any normal rider with that bike would have $3k in this project. That's a hell of a down payment on a new bike.

To the average joe, any bike less than 15 years old isnt going to feel much different than a brand new one other than ergonomics. The first 450 i rode was a 2004 crf450 and i cant feel the power or handling difference from my kx450. Suspension is done on the kx but power wise, cant tell.

I loved the vid; but, do the math...there's THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS in that thing.

Also, ride that bike back-to-back against an '18 and you'll be looking into buying the '18.

It def seems like our tech has plateued. Look at the gap between a '79 and a '91 mx bike in chassis, suspension, engine, brakes versus a 2006 to a 2018.

I have an 08 with kit suspension and it is every bit as good as the 16-18s I have ridden. Just an awesome awesome bike that feels very organic. And I have an 2018 with just a little time on it for comparison.

In the 70's and 80's you couldn't even turn up with last years bike, technology was moving ahead so quickly. I can't tell a year model at a glance anymore.

I bought a 2006 CRF450r for cheap. I knew it needed lots of work and granted things are a little more expensive up here in Canada. initial cost 2k, rebuilt the whole engine myself - my first 4 stroke rebuild. I bought a new OEM crank, cylinder, piston, cam chain and Head with SS valves. I did all the tranny bearings, wheel bearings, linkage, swing arm, and brakes. Luckily it had new tires on it lol I bought new plastics and seat cover as well as chain guides and a million other little things like filters and cables and controls. All in I spent 3 k on parts and it still wasn't perfect. It could use rims and definitely needs new rotors. Still 5 K Canadian and I have a solid bike. I've put 75 hours on it so far with no real problems. I'm doing some suspension work on it now but I will probably never sell it. Definitely the best bike I've ever had.

Can't knock anyone riding an older bike, and no reason can't be just as fast on one. Liked my '08 YZ450 and it handled better than my '10. If you can rebuild them don't need latest and greatest. For me it's a time/money equation. At some point there's a crossover just like vehicles. No doubt the technology is slowing down. What's the next big thing? Not ready for electric.
