Neither. Make it to where permanent numbers are only earned in the 450 class. I like the idea of riders having “their number”. Just dont like 250 guys getting one from a regional title

Keep the system currently in place. If you guys want to limit the number of riders with permanent numbers, maybe make it where they need to score a certain amount of points averaging around the top 25 in the grand national championship in two or three consecutive seasons in order to earn a career number, or by winning a championship. For example if they finish top 10 in the overall points and earn a number, they'll need to finish in the top 25 to keep it for the following year. Once they do that for (lets say) three years consecutively, they keep it. I can't imagine the amount of confusion from the fans, and even the forums, once you realize that you have no idea who the guy is outside the top 10 is (number wise) each season. You think it's bad now keeping up? Try changing it every year. Sure... you'd know who number 1-10 probably is, but beyond that do you really know? If Dean Wilson is #15, then #6, then #18, then he gets hurt and has to run #128, etc.. will you enjoy the old system?

The Core fans would still know , and the occasional fans dont know anyway, but they could easily understand
That thats the order they finished the previous year

Had no problem with the old system, perm numbers came about cause they had to copy nascrap. Trying to create a branding.

Does it matter, either way? A rider's number doesn't have an effect on the racing at all.

I think it's fine the way it is, the old run what you earned system was terrible in my opinion. If they were to make any change I'd like to see them go to a system like the GP's where it's pretty much run whatever you want as long as no one else has it.

Run what you earned the year before.
250 east and west should not be included.
Why permanent? Nobody can sell any of their own merch anyways. Why bother?

I like the permanent number system, the amount riders switch teams these days it would just makes more sense. Also looking back on old races is easier too

They can sell their own merchandise, just not at the races.

I know i didnt
And imo it would be really cool if they all Had the number in front of their name just like Jason has the #1 then we all know just at a glance , and it becomes a pride thing , besides just #1 which obviously does come with pride , but then every number has meaning imo

If it were up to me
450 Sx/mx 250 mx championship = career number, all numbers available, outside of #1, or if taken by another previous champion

Career numbers have a different color scheme (white 450 black 250 backgrounds, Gold numbers?)

To maintain a career number, certain amount of points most be earned each yr, with a 1 yr injury exemption

Current champions most run #1

All others are assigned based on combined SX/Mx points (250sx points do not count)

----------------
Easy enough to where someone new knows that the guy thats #12 was twelfth fastest last year

Helps riders build their brand, because lets be honest, how many non-champions have a brand, Hanny and 722, thats about it.

As long as #1 is permanently reserved for Jeremy McGrath, I like the second choice.

part of me is torn as the sport grows and changes. How many upcoming riders grow up with a particular number only to have to have some random odd 3 digit number, or who ran a 3 digit only to go to something close? or how many guys who have made a name using their backwater number only to have to change it once they score points ala enticknap who will lose his 722 this year, a number which he has been branding an image

on one hand. I feel that perhaps the sport, with its evolution, and considering that there are nowhere near the applications to use up all 999 numbers that perhaps they do away with the ranking number system and allow individuals to claim a professional number provided it is available at the end of the year. maybe still keep singles limited to title winners but beyond that all two digits are up for grabs

but part of me is still old school and thinks that only title winners get a permanant number provided its a single or lowest two digit and beyond that it falls to points earned

450'S can only earn permanent numbers after earning them in 450 class. 250's defending champs get 1, others what they earn, after 450 pick permanent number. first year in 450 from moving up from 250 get 3 digit. Boom!!

Go back to earned numbers from the previous season.

I get it MX/SX was trying to copy NASCAR because several of the most popular drivers had the same number for along time. Enough to be recognizesble but that was merely a coincidence because the teams own the numbers not the drivers.

In my opinion it’s meant nothing for MX/SX. Nobody buys a Ricky Carmichael t-shirt, coffee cup, key chain, or whatever becuase of his number. MX/SX is and always has been a name recognition sport. Riders change teams, bikes, gear but their name stands still.

Now the permanent number system is out of control. Make it simple again. You earn your number each and every season and the champ rides #1.

I totally agree , Look at how seriously a lot of privateers take it trying to get a top 100 national number , it should be that way all the way through and especially getting into the top 10 , imo that would be taken seriously.
Whats strange is one of the main guys benefiting from having a number for a long time would be Adam Enticknap
And then he is losing his because of earning a number
Just ironic.

Permanent numbers are lame, earned numbers are the way to go. I am old skool though, so that doesn't mean squat.

I like the idea of earned numbers, but from a business point of view you have to go permanent for branding purposes. Average Joe decide to like a rider he will associate the number to that rider, change that and he may not care enough to search the guy out.

Riders need to have the ability to sell merchandise, that’s when they will benefit from permanent numbers.

They already have the ability to sell their own merchandise, just not at the races where it would be more beneficial to them. That needs to change.

I don't get why they aren't allowed. What's the big deal? Because Feld doesn't profit anything from those sales? They already profit enough from giving out a tiny purse payout. Let the riders make some extra money. Might not make much of a difference for the top guys but would help out the more popular privateers.

Personally I prefer the run what you earn system but if it's going to stay the way it is now the riders need to have the right to sell their stuff at the races. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense if you ask me.

Go back to earned numbers...... Riders can't capitalize on their "brand" since someone decided they don't really own it anyway. Crazy.

To me its much cooler this way , and in a way they sorta still do have an earned system and privateers still strive to get a top 100 national number Except for Enticknap

So you Really think that an average joe ( i would guess this to mean someone that doesn't really follow the series)
Would Know who a guy is only by his number ?
I just Dont see it , i think if they know who anyone is its its likely gonna be a front runner , or a Guy there buddy told them about . I dont know just different opinions i guess.

That’s what I mean by the ability, right now there is no opportunity to sell them in the pits.

A guy like Stankdog could make an extra 30k selling his 2 stroke shirt.

You're right that it doesn't actually have an effect on the racing and if you're watching on TV they don't matter either since the riders have transponders and the placing order scrolls at the top/side of the screen.

That said if you're at an actual event it would be pretty difficult to figure out who's battling against who if the riders had no numbers. Even more difficult with the 250 riders since team riders all wear the same gear.

They might not affect the racing but they do serve a purpose.
