Ben Riddle is in prison on drug charges, Marley still races Vet classes and local pro.

When you say 'next big thing' neither of those guys come to mind though.. to me next big thing is a dominate amateur who is obviously faster than the rest. A lot of the guys I see mentioned had good amateur careers and even a few LL's championships, but they were never dominate.

I raced Ben Riddle and Marley my entire amateur career. My schoolboy class at LL's had Marley, Riddle, Pastrana, Payne, Racine, Tedesco, Short, and more. None of us held a candle to Pastrana. If he finished the race, he usually beat us all handily.

Pretty sure going straight to a factory Suzuki out of the Ams makes you a 'next big thing'...

There were plenty of kids in that situation who never made anything of it. Were Bess and Shimp the 'next big thing'? They were both in that same situation. Listen, I'm certainly not saying they weren't fast as hell. But there's still a very significant step between guys who made it and the ones that didn't. For every Andrew Short or Ivan Tedesco who made factory rider careers after being not so stellar amateurs, there's a thousand who didn't. Are they all the next big thing?

Riddle won the Horizon Award at his last LL's and got the Team Suzuki ride so I would def. think of him being the next big thing. He was dominate the last couple years of his amamteur career.
What I have seen more times than not being around this sport since early 80's is that more of these are burnt out by the time they get to this level and just have nothing left and are over it.....some can keep it up but most cannot..Heck they have been racing for 10 years or more already as teenagers.
I know it affected me personally----race heavy 5/6 years then took a couple off then another 5 years then a couple more off etc....worked for me and I am over 40 now.....

Nice quad post. I get what you're trying to say but I was there too, on the line against him up until he went pro. Yes he did win titles and the Horizon award, but he was mortal and bearable. As a matter of fact the year you're talking about when he won the Horizon award it was a full on battle between himself, Marley, and McGavern where he didn't win every moto, the racing was close. He wasn't Pastrana, RC, or Stewart kind of fast where you just can't believe it. To me that's what I think of when I hear 'next big thing'. The kid who destroys his class by 30 seconds every moto at the biggest races.

Hey Shawn what is your real name? I'm JW Patton... used to come down to Mosier Valley a lot back in the early 90s. Just wondering if I know you.

Ben Riddle used to haul the mail at Daniel Boone. I remember watching him race 125 B and they raced them with 250 A on a stagger start. Riddle would catch and pass most if not all of the pros on 250s while he was on a 125. He had a nice riding style too.

Last I heard about Bradley Graham he was working at his local Dairy Queen and going to school. Good question about Evenou, who knows where he is. McGourty is doing something in the moto industy and real estate making very good money. Just dont know about anybody else.

And Robbie Horton doesnt ride all summer long and then comes out and rides the Arenacross series with me and runs top 3 every weekend. Just kills it after not riding all summer. He did the X Games I think 2 years ago and got a Silver. I think he has made a decent career at what he has done.

Bobby long time no see how ya been? Shawn is pretty much spot on with his assessment so Im guessing we most likely have been on the same gate together at some point. Riddle could be blazing fast one moto and not so much the next. Evennou from what I understand works at FMF now.
