Stumbled upon this on Reddit. Pretty cool, but would be cooler with motocross for comparison.

Jeff Ward mentioned once he made more money from his 2 or 3 Indy 500 races, than all of his motocross combined.

How fucked up is that?

If that's true then it's pretty fucked up. I understand car racing has a bigger audience but it's not like Jeff Ward was a back of the pack rider. He's got 56 wins and 7 titles. 14 year career.

In IndyCar he's got 1 win and 8 podiums in 61 races over 7 years.

The Indy 500 is a cash cow. There's 250,000 people that watch the race in person inside the track. The average ticket is like $150. That's $37.5M in tickets alone.

If you've ever followed the race every year, there are drivers that literally only race that Indycar race all year and if they get Top 10, they make 300-400k in prize money alone.

Here you go . . . . . showed the old and new SX points....definitely can see how the mid-pack riders get more points.

Had to add some transparency to the Indycar points to see all of the points systems that don't pay out as far as Indycar.

Here's a more basic line chart.

One problem with this data set is that some forms of racing have more participants than others. Most NASCAR races have ~42 whereas F1 has 22. That warps the data comparison. One solution would be to map it as a percentage of total points available in the race.

He said just his Indy 500 finishes. Not sure if he just meant those few races, but I know it pays. WELL.

I found this from 1997 to 2005 he made almost 5 mill. Not sure if accurate or if that is just winnings. Surely Yahoo, Target and his other title sponsors paid dearly for leading laps at Indy 500.
