Hi Guys.

Last thursday I had a mole removed and it's been diagnosed as a melanoma.

The Doctor says it's in the first layer of skin and I will be ok but I have to have a large chunk cut out of my side tomorrow to increase the margins.

I know some of you have dealt with this stuff, but please, go and get a skin check. I've never been burnt where this mole was, on my rib cage under my arm.

Don't go to a Doctor. Go to a specialist. It might save your life.

I met my future father in law when he was only 40. A couple of years later he was my father in law. A couple of years later he was diagnosed with melanoma. He died at 48. Younger than I am now. He was the most awesome man. Sorry to be dramatic but like crush said, go get checked out.

Hey mate, no good to hear but you got it early.
Found out a school mate I played footy and rode bikes with passed away from skin cancer.
Get checked myself every 6-12 months and being 70’s Nth beaches kid I’ve had my fair share of spots (7) cut out of me.
As the ad says, “slip slop slap”, and get regular check ups.

I go and return for a check up when instructed by the dermatologist , my parents have both had pieces of their forehead cut out . The girl down the street passed away from skin cancer a few years back for not taking it serious.

I get a regular checkup at the VA as a Vietnam veteran exposed to Agent Orange. Two bouts with prostate cancer and I had surgery and radiation. Then a small mole was found on my arm a few years ago. It was only about the size of a pencil eraser and they just sliced it off. Two weeks later, they called and said it was a melanoma and they needed to remove a little more. They did, about a credit card size piece of meat was removed and down about 3/4 inch into my arm. The margins they said. I have to get a full body check every six months now. So far, so good. Glad they caught yours early. Don't screw around, get shit checked out.

Yep, I had a lesion removed from my nose and upper lip last year. It required reconstructive surgery so my nose didn't turn sideways! Worst surgery ever. I joke with my wife and kids that if I ever get it again, I'm just going to let the cancer take me, but of course that isn't true.

Doctors found a tumor on the back of my tongue 6 months ago. They determined it was a type of skin cancer. I've been doing radiation and chemo therapy since January. Won't know the results until I have another PET scan next month. I was alerted that something was wrong one morning while shaving, I had a swollen neck gland. After procrastinating a few weeks my wife finally got me to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. The doctors tell me the success rate for this type of cancer runs above 90%.

Mate, glad you found it early. Curious to know if you wear sunscreen and sunglasses all the time?

Also, check into medical MJ as a treatment option. Rick Simpson is a pioneer in the field and treated his own skin cancer with oil.

Best of luck to everyone out there, cancer sucks.

This month in 2015, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer at the ripe old age of 40! This disease usually effects old white guys in their 70s, but the oncologist explained it was probably exposure to chemicals as a scientist in my job, so if you work around solvents fuels etc get straight down the doctors if your piss looks a funny color.

It took two surgeries to get rid of that inch size tumor, and I will leave it to everyone's imagination how they do those surgeries and how they get chemo to where it's needed. Analysis revealed that if the tumor had penetrated a few layers of cells deeper, there is a 50% chance I wouldn't be typing this email.

In the world's greatest irony, most of my working life is dedicated to inventing new cancer drugs.

PSA, You're an asshole. Due to high amounts of UV rays collected while riding this is definitely Moto related and an important reminder regardless. What a twat you are.

How is the skin check conducted? Visual examination? Do they need to excise all moles (raised or not) and check them?

I got skin checked a few moths ago and all was well, but the dermatologist actually said - you have beautiful moles!

Not something I expected to ever hear! I would have asked her out if I wasn't married...

I was diagnosed 12 years ago with melanoma. Like you, it was caught early (stage 1Cool . Be thankful that all they do is take a chunk out of you (wider margins). Caught early and that's likely the end of it. You now need to be on high alert though going forward. I still go 2x per year to the dermatologist but went 4x per year for 5 years after my initial diagnosis. I've had countless other moles tested but thankfully no other melanoma's to this point. And moto related - I no doubt attribute mine to all of the days I spent at the track back in the 80's running around without a shirt. I can't prove it but I had a fair number of sunburns from that.

Go to YouTube and search "Cancer is a fungus". I mixed it to the consistency of toothpaste and killed it. Had it burned off by Doc and it came back. Used this and has been 6+ yrs..

Thanks for the responses guys – I posted for that exact reason. So people understand it's more common than you think. It's not someone you might hear of. It's someone you do know. All of us are into sports that have us outside and sun exposure education is generally pretty shithouse.

I say go to a specialist because i've had the experience of a GP telling me that "that's a normal mole" that ended up not being... Dermatologist or Skin specialist will examine you and if you're high risk you should seek out a mole-mapping service – every 6 months, (will now be 3 months) I go and have a full body photo taken that is mapped to a 3D model, and they take super hi-res photos of every mole on my body (450+)... this maps changes in moles, and importantly, the full body photo captures anything new.

That's what has saved me. This mole wasn't there 6 months ago.

Go and get checked, please. It doesn't take long and the stories above tell you it's more common than you think.

100% - I go see a dermatologist annually for a complete check-up. As much time as we all spend in the sun at the track, it is time well spent.

If I remember correctly both Jeff Ward and Travis Preston both had bouts with skin cancer.

Good to hear mate... And this melanoma I had wasn't in a spot that got a lot of sun. I'm not the dude walking around shirtless.

I've seen Wardy, O'Show and RC post over the years about it... didn't know Travis though. Best thing you can do is catch the shit early!
