Riders Set to Race the YZ450F in Supercross and Motocross Championships

Cypress, Calif. – August 22, 2018–Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. (YMUS) is pleased to announce that the Monster Energy/Yamaha Factory Racing Team has signed new contracts with Justin Barcia and Aaron Plessinger to complete its two-rider 450 class roster for the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship and AMA Pro Motocross Championship series in 2019 and beyond.

Barcia, who began the 2018 season as a fill-in rider, proved his merit early on as a contender in the supercross series and quickly became a full-time team member for the remainder of the race year. With nine podium finishes under his belt, Barcia will continue to fight for third overall in the 450MX Championship this Saturday at the season finale in Crawfordsville, Indiana. With ten years of professional racing experience, including back-to-back 250SX East Championships in ’11 and ‘12, Barcia will spearhead the team’s 450 efforts as a seasoned veteran in the class.

Recently crowned 250MX and 250SX West Champion, Aaron Plessinger, is set to make his 450-class debut in Monster Energy AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross with the Monster Energy/Yamaha Factory Racing Team in the 2019 season. The 22-year-old Ohio native has displayed his versatile skill set in all types of conditions and will prove to be an asset to the team.

Keith McCarty – Motorsports Racing Division Manager

“We’re very happy and proud to sign Justin and Aaron to our Factory Team to race our YZ450F. We saw great potential in Justin when we extended his agreement through the 2018 motocross season and we’re pleased with his consistent finishes this summer. Aaron has been with Yamaha for over a decade and moved up through the ranks with the bLU cRU family. He has been supported by Rock River Yamaha in his amateur career and most recently with Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star Racing – they have helped to prepare him well, along with his undeniable talent, which is obvious from his dual championship winning season in Supercross and motocross. We look forward to great things in the future from both riders in 2019 and beyond.”

Justin Barcia, YZ450F #51

“I’m really excited to extend my contract with the team. It’s an honor and a pleasure working with everyone at Yamaha. It started out as just a fill-in ride and it turned into something a lot more. I can’t ask for a better team, it’s just been awesome. We’ve really turned my career around, I was in a really tough place, struggling a lot and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do next and Yamaha gave me the opportunity to ride a really good motorcycle and I went out there and gave it my all and put in some really good results. It’s just been a pleasure working with all the guys on the team and riding the new Yamaha 450. I’m really excited for the future and I hope to finish out my career at Yamaha, that’s definitely my goal.”

Aaron Plessinger, YZ450F #23

“Signing with Yamaha for the 450 Class is amazing! I've been with Yamaha since 2008 and we have had an awesome relationship ever since. I feel like it's going to go really well for me next year, just being on a great team with good people around. I can't wait to start testing and get my bike dialed in!”

The 2018 AMA Pro Motocross Championship concludes this Saturday, Aug. 25, in Crawfordsville, Indiana for the Ironman National. Both Justin and Aaron are set to represent the U.S. Team at the upcoming Motocross of Nations on Oct. 6-7 at RedBud MX in Buchanan, Michigan.

That is a great team! Barcia will be a podium guy in 19 and Plessinger will be at least a solid top 10 guy with a possibility to get a podium here and there.

It's also nice to see that Plessinger is moving up from the 250s. He has won what there is to win, no need to defend the titles. He is aiming for bigger things.

Good for both of them. Does this mean AP is keeping #23?

Nice to see AP not pulling an osborne.
You say that like Osborne turned down a factory 450 ride recently.

Hell yes!

I'm an even bigger AP fan now, good on him for stepping up and not milking the 250 class for a decade.

That's a strong team, good for Yamaha.

As for the moving up issue, has there ever been a 250 rider turn down a factory 450 ride? Some guys just never get the call up, those that do take it every time.

Barcia has not been a rider that I liked or respected his entire career..... until this year. The guy has really turn things around for himself. He has matured a ton since those early days and I am glad to see it. He is fast, consistent and much more leveled headed. I am glad to see that Yamaha is sticking with him and giving him the support he needs to ride to his full potential.

Supporting AP is a no brainer for me. Love his work ethic and consistency. Going to love watching them both ride SX and MX next year!

No, but he did sign an extension last summer that included another year in 250SX at a minimum. Really the best he could negotiate?

Correction. Said he's thinking about #7. Hasn't formally decided yet.

I'd like to see him take 7, though.

They still have four guys for next year, (Plessinger would’ve made it five) I wouldn’t guarantee his spot being filled.

Given the history of #7 on a blue bike, I might be tempted to go with #8. Or even #5, it must be available as well, unless Dungey petitions it.

he wanted to go up but they talked him into staying down to defend his 250 outdoor title cause he was suppose to race 450 outdoors this year , next season hes officially moving up , stop bitching about riders staying down in a pro class

Pretty sure he didn't have a gun to his head when negotiating his extension.

You're right, he should have turned down that offer and taken one of the many other 450 factory team offers he had on the table. Are you really this dense?

Great for them !!!

However it says multi-year but we don't know for how long :

How will we be able to benchrace the silly season and the return of JS7 next year without this factor ? LaughingBlinkWoohoo

Duclos is racing Ironman this weekend. Maybe his results will get him bumped over to the Star team
