Wouldn't having someone help you pick your bike up and then having two guys hold it up while you try and kick start it be considered outside assistance?

The other guys in the wreck didn't have anyone holding their bikes for them.

This is taken directly from the AMA rulebook:

If a rider stops for any reason during an event, he must
restart without any outside assistance. However, if a rider
falls, blocking the course and endangering other riders, he
may receive help or have his machine pushed off the
course. An attempt to help under any other situation will
result in the rider’s disqualification.

I was just curious as to what the rules were.

As well you are allowed assistance in the first corner.

It might stem from the fact that they are privateers, and can all the help they get is busy on his way to the signal area. I was standing right there when it happened, and JGR was there before the bike was done tipping over.

Each "big team" has at least one team personnel in the 1st corner for just such circumstances because, it is allowed.

Is it fair that just the "big teams" have this luxury? no, but quite often you can see these guys helping out privateers when they have trouble in the 1st corner.

Take a look at the infamous Daytona SX start from this year:

Not only is it allowed in the first corner, it's allowed for a reason - because a first turn pileup that's not cleared in 2 minutes means a red flag and restart. And a restart is just an opportunity for another pileup and so on. Sure, it's unfair that big teams have people down there to help and privateers don't, but on the list if injustices done to privateers, that's not even in the top 10.

Wrong rulebook. You have to get the AMA Pro Racing rulebook http://www.amaproracing.com/assets/MX_Rules_2009.pdf which says:

g. Outside assistance to a rider on the course is forbidden

except when the assistance is given by flag marshals or

officials placed by the Race Director for the purpose of

control and safety with the following exceptions:

i. Assistance by crew members is permitted during

practice.

ii. Assistance by crew members is permitted from the

starting gate up through the first turn following the start of

a moto on the first lap only.

if a guy can't find one single friend to stand in the 1st turn for him at a national, he must be an asshole and as such deserves to get run over

By 78 knobby tires, 3 loud piped mule-rhino-utv things (yes we know you are cool, but seriously, quiet those damn things) AND the Whoop Monster mobile.
