At 53 I am slowing down. No more tracks. Just riding local Hi-desert up to Big Bear, and other desert Mtn communities with old guys now. Having a ton of fun though.

I started out buying a street legal 96 KLX in 2018 for $2200. bored to a 307cc, Had Clark at Noleen do the suspension for my fatness, and then added a 34mm pumper caarb & a Big Gun exhaust. This thing is a TON of fun.

However I am really wanting a new bike with fuel injection and a magic button and more power. I have been really researching the FE350 and it seems that everyone seems to LOVE this bike. But dang it it is expensive. I am seeing 11K + for a new one.

So here's my question. I am thinking of just buying a new YZ250F ( another bike that everyone seems to love) and then making it street legal ?

Looks like this would save me about $4000.00. Curious if any of you have had time on either or both and what the drawbacks may be?

Buy a bike that is already street legal... especially in California, lots of hoops to jump through when making a 250f street legal here.

X2. For instance, the hoop of CARB and the DMV saying, "Sorry, it is impossible to make that machine street legal, because the VIN says so.
You:
"But I've made it street legal according to all CHP requirements."
DMV:
"But the VIN says it is illegal."
You:
"But I've added emission control equipment and this bike is cleaner than a Honda Accord."
DMV:
"But the VIN says it is illegal."
You:
"But your own website says these are the requirements for street-legal use in California."
DMV:
"Let me ask my boss.... nope, she says the VIN says it is illegal."

See what I'm getting at here?

Save yourself hundreds of hours of work, thousands of dollars, and millions of headaches, and just buy a KTM or Husqvarna street-legal dirt bike. That's my best advice. If you must have a Yamaha, they make a street-legal machine which is a passable dirt bike (WR250).

It's like putting race car on the road, while fun, not practical.

The gearing on a motocross bike is horrible for street riding. Plus the maintenance of a 250F, would require constant oil changes and multiple top-ends a year (depending how much you ride it). Definitely want to get a purpose-built bike

I know someone who made their KX450F street-legal and registered it in AZ. Didn't take long for CA to see through the loophole. That bike is no longer on the road here in CA.

I guess I shoulda mentioned that I can get it legal with no problems. And that I ride in an area 90% way off road away from LE.

We got into dual sporting about 3 years ago. I bought a Yamaha XT250 for my wife, and a plated 03' WR450 that was "Grandfathered in" for me. It was a fun bike but I wanted something newer with fuel injection, and not 17 years old since we were starting to get further out in the boonies. Plus the gas mileage sucked with the carb. The bike hauls ass though, it's my sons now. Anyway I sucked it up and bought a 2019 EXC 500. Expensive little bastard but I figured I'm 60 years old so fuck it. Best decision I ever made. I don't like that bike, I love that bike. I don't even take my YZ 250 to the desert anymore. The 500 goes faster than I want to go, and tractors like a diesel in technical stuff. I put 3 grand down and financed the rest. They (Poway KTM) had low intereest rates. My payment's 247' out of which 14 dollars is interest. I figured for an extra 14 bucks a month I couldn't go wrong.

Looks like I am getting the FE350. No hassles. Plug and play.

You'll like the FE350... just uncork it and do the suspension for your style of riding.

Excellent choice. My buddy has the KTM version of that bike and loves it.

Strongly suggest a 2020 WR. A YZ is jus too stiff and rigid for trails. Hell even a WR needs softening up a bit as it’s made for competition.

They worst thing, and impossible to fix is the transmission ratios. (As mentioned.)
A 5 speed close ratio is perfect on the track. Worst case you change the final drive to suit.

Off road: 1st is too high for technical stuff, and as soon as it opens up, like a fire road you are in 5th, looking for 6th or 7th!
That’s why the KTM/Huskies come with a 6 speed “wide ratio”.
