Any of you who have a big bore two stroke(500cc), what do you run for the rear tire?
The old standard was to use a 5.10 x 18 but that does not seem to be available anymore.

Michelin X11 Trials Radial, Tubeless, on a 2,5" rim.

Of course, I do ride in very different areas / conditions to most 500 riders. It's so rare that I use a knobby nowadays, and I've a variety of 140 sized Michelins and Pirellis languishing in my workshop, if I were to throw a knobby back on.

Whatever type of tyre used - a 2.5" rim is a wonderful thing on 450s / 500s.

Well, I have a 120/100x18 Dunlop D739 on my '81 yz465 and it just lights it up if I get on it too much. It does have great traction when I only get on it sparingly but I want the biggest tire that will fit. I was just hoping that someone knew of a Dealer or Distributor who still has an old stock of good 18" moto tires available...preferably some Bridgstone M22's.
How do those Terra Flex tires actually work, in the desert or on a motocross track.

When I had my 500 I did the 19 inch rim and it works awesome. As stated above.

^^This.x2 It is the biggest footprint I've found, it's a 140 metric. I rode it today on my CR500, it really makes a difference when the bike can hook up, for a change. Not too expensive, eitherWink

Back in 1980, I raced a YZ465 G model, it would light up every tire except for a Terra Flex 5:50x18. I miss that bike. I found a YZ 250 G basket case for $50.00. I've just started the restoration. I wanted a 465 though, for vintage racing. I'll build a Hannah replica out of it.Grinning

For sand and mud...yes. Anything else...not so much!!!! Crazy deep knobs, but it's not reversible due to the sand/scoop design. Running one on a 500 smoker in sand would be epic!!!

...don't like the front....at all.

From what I remember on the thread on cr500riders or bannedcr500riders forum people seem to have a strong opinion on the terraflex. Where they loved it and liked it for many conditions and then others that thought it was junk.

I raced KX500s for years, just run the same tires you'd run on a 450. And get used to replacing them more often. I hated the teraflex tires, they are so heavy that they ruin your suspension action and I didn't think they hooked up any better than a normal tire. Have fun, 500s are a blast!

Those Terraflex are junk. They are glorified rim protectors, not tires.

You don't need anything special when it comes to tires. It's not like a 2-Stroke 500 is some kind of beast rocket.

Just run whatever tire you normally run, in a 120/XX size. You need to learn throttle control. A big flywheel weight helps also.

I rode KX500s for years.

I ran a terraflex on my 450. Traction was awesome but It weighed so much the suspension needed immediate attention. Way to much unsprung weight. Pain in the butt to mount too. I did get alot of looks though. People were drueling over it

I remember throwing a 250 sized tire on my KX500 likely a Dunlop 752 It worked so much better on a rutty (not dry) track that I switched for those conditions.

I haven't run these on my cr500 but some cr500 aficionados swear by them. I do think it is the biggest friggin knobby tire anyone makes, and I hear it weighs a fair amount. But if you want a knobby that will scare women and children then you get this.

http://www.mandhtires.com/Teraflex-Tires/TERAFLEX-140-80-18--M105#.VFEC…
So it looks like Interco now makes that tire, in the USA no less.

https://www.intercotire.com/tire_brand/teraflex_motosteel

This is from Interco, when I contacted them yesterday...

What’s the difference between Style 1 and Style 2?

Tread design style 1 and tread design style 2 as shown on web site.

Tread style 2 ; only available in 140/80-18 and 140/90-17 sizes, recommended rim width 3.5”

Tread style 1 ; only available in 110/100-18 size, recommended rim width 2.15” / 2,5”

On a 2000 CR500, would I have clearance issues running the Style 2? Would the recommended 3.5” wheel cause any clearance issues?

As a trials rider and someone who has ridden a 500 that’s sounds scary as heck😬. Seems like once it breaks loose it’ll never come back

Throttle Control, young man! Being a Trials rider - as I was for many years - you should be adept at that!

You don't have to slam the throttle wide open - well, you do that, and you will tend to be in deep s**t on a 500, or indeed, a 450 and up modern day 4t.

500 2ts are Torquey things, far, far more than 4ts, it's just the near vertical HP graph that gets you. From 0 revs to lucky to be 6K revs, where a 500 2t tends to sign off, is a somewhat more 'abrupt' power delivery than a modern 4t that tends to have max power ( and quite a few now with higher HP figures than a 500 2t) around the 9 / 10K.

In reality, said Michelin, is so bloody sticky, it gets heaps of traction. And, in my local area, which is rock ledge and rock base - plus Sand, it works beautifully.

But, the far scarier thing than breaking loose under power, is the way a Trials tyre can just sliiiiiiiiide along downhill, on dirt, as there are no knobs to 'catch' on things Woohoo . So, I Do use Knobbies on general trail rides away from my area, and competitive events. But, even those I gravitate to the various 'Gummy' compound tyres that have so proliferated, these days. I just Do Not want my old Teddy Bear of a bike, to light up the rear end on rocks / logs and roots - that leads to pain........Dizzy

I've no problem with the wear rate of soft, Gummy tyres - it's a Safety thing, on the old beast. And I need all the Safety I can get, in my 7th decade on this mud / dust ball!

Old stock would just chunk and throw knobs. Bridgestone M22s are long gone but they were a great hard terrain tire. I miss the the M403/M404 combo too.
I looked at my 465 and I guess you could get a Terra Flex in there. I'm surprised they are still available. I would thing that as heavy as there and with steel belts your back end would fell kind of dead back there.
Throttle control is not a bad thing.

Always ride a gear high, or two gears. Sean Collier says you up-shift into the turns...lol.

In all honesty I never did find them that intimidating.

I always liked the 110 better than the 120 on my CR500. The fat tire really seemed to hang up in the ruts (which is a way of life on our tracks).
