Notice I did not say "made" as this track was laid out on a natural Hillside in Southern California.
I believe they only raced it for this one National, it was all grass during practice.

Name the track, year and as many riders as you can spot in the picture. This was taken by my good neighbor and friend the Legend--Tom Cosley. 😎

I know Bauer raced it that day so he needs to wait for the others to chime in first and he will set the record straight. Woohoo

Picture is hanging in my Factory and this is the best angle I could get at it. Smile

Was it the one national they ran at Escape Country?

Super stoked to see Gaylon Mosier. RIP. One of my all time favorite riders.

Racing World. 1973-74. Just did a MTB ride down the road in O’Neil park.

Looks like Jeff Ward ripped the holeshot in his backyard.

You might be thinking of a race at Sears Point, I believe it was around 1977 and was natural terrain on the hillside near the road course. I can picture grass and serious rolling hills with elevation.

That year seems to match the bikes too.

I think the only races there were 1976 and 1977, a few nationals and Trans-AMA races. The track reminded me of Pebble Beach. Nothing man made but technical.

Yep you nailed it good job! 👍
The start area was short and steep right after the gate you went straight up a steep hill I doubt the 125's got out of second gear!

The track was laid out on a hillside with all kinds of off cambers, tall grass and steep hills there was not a level portion on the track that I recall. All they did was lay out some ribbon to mark the course and let the rider's out for practice.

525 is Pat Jacobson from the Washington Oregon area he worked his way up to a factory Suzuki ride and either his first ride or race he crashed and was paralyzed a real bummer he was a good rider.

I think 526 might be one of the Wanket Brothers not sure?

The Escape Country National.
I remember it like it was yesterday. We showed up that day and found stakes/banners laid out through 3’ tall bright green grass.
To watch the first riders plow through the grass and turn it into dark loam was such a beautiful site to see. Hannah just thrashed the competition that day. Probably my favorite race I ever witnessed

While I did not race that day in 1978, I was able to ride the entire track for most of the day later that week after the National. My friend and I went out 3 or 4 days after the event and had the track almost all to ourselves.

To this day, my favorite MX track I have ever rode, that includes Mammoth, Saddleback, Carlsbad, Anaheim SX, LA Coliseum SX and almost every track in SoCal since then. Good times! Smile

If this is correct. I was spectating that day by complete accident. My mom brought my brother and I to Escape Country for what we thought was going to be a small local race. We saw a shit-long line and wondered WTF was going on. When we got to the gate the guy asked why we brought our bikes. "To race, of course!" He tried to turn us away but the owner of Premier Yamaha, Paul, who I had just bought my yz 80 from talked them into letting us in with our bikes. We trailrode all day and watched some of the national. I didn't even know what I was watching, I just knew it was bad-ass...I did know it was Wardy's first race and that he pulled holeshot. I also believe Hannah won that day. I remember riding my 80 on about 20 yards of the track after the race was over and thinking how gnarley it was. Btw, the name of the track: The DeSoto Moto.....if that's where this is at.

Yup. Just as I remember it, thought we were going to race Escape Country just like any other weekend and stumbled onto our first Nat. I think I saw Wardys last race on a mini at the World Mini GP a month or a few before on the Marty Smith track. I remember galking at his outdated XR75 with some weird ass Boge shocks (I think) with dial gauges on them. The day that photo was taken doesn't do the uphill justice - it was steeper than it looked in the photo. Steeper than Saddleback from what I remember but shorter I think. I remember standing behind Wardy in the food truck line thinking I'm taller and bigger than this guy and thinking how much faster he was than me. I remember jumping on the track on my YZ100E after the race and not even being able to complete a lap because of the off camber ruts up to my handlebars. I also remember the untouched virgin grass ala Unadilla for first practice. and Bob Hannah. Holy Freeking Bob Hannah!!

Coto de Caza?! You still practically live there! My friends dad had a membership and I remember going to the country club at Coto after racing at Escape Country - Good Times indeed!

For sure, I remember you and your brother Ian. We were at races together with CRC, CMC or Corona MX/GP.

Many tracks have come and gone thru the years.

Many tracks have come and gone over the years.

One track I really wish I could ride again is Lake Whitney...my all time favorite. Gone but not forgotten.

Damn Newman, can't believe the primo stuff you have collected and restored.
You should open a Museum, but don't take Gary Jones's bikes! Cheerful

Into vintage karts too newman ? What engines are those ? I've got almost all the parts necessary to build a West Bend 820 in the garage.

I'm surprised that this thread has lasted this long without anybody else coming up with the name of the track (not the park). For extra credit, how about the names of the two other tracks at that park?...or the names of the two hallmark jumps on the main track at that facility?

68 Jimmy Martin from TX, between Magoo and Barnett might be 37 Danny Turner.

Not really. I have a friend who is big into them and I always drooled over the Rathmann Xterminator. He eventually sold me one. It has a set of Mac 10's on it and he included a fresh pair of Mac 20's. He had a dozen or more restored West Bend engines. Really cool stuff.

hmmmm what part of one-off off tracks don't you understand? Dry

Yes Unadilla is awesome I've been there three times but it's also been around since the early days of motocross--the Yankee Stadium of Moto.

I raced that day, it rained quite a bit during the week and the track had sticky mud and huge ruts!
