How bad is Webb? Is he looking at surgery after SX?
As someone else mentioned Yamaha should prep a bike for RV just for kicks
I think Dungey has had the itch to race again for awhile now which is why he was trying to return to the sport a year or two ago when he was looking for a team/support. (Can't remember when that discussion was happening).
That was only a year (or two) ago and from my understanding, that was Dungey going out of his way looking for a full time/season ride rather than just a couple rounds. That tells me at that time he felt he could still be competitive.
For whatever reason, he was unable to secure a ride then. Not to mention, a lot of people didn't think it was a good idea for him to come out of retirement. I'm sure he disagreed with some of the nay sayers and was bummed out that he was unable to return.
This left a desire and brief chapter of his life unfulfilled. Also, the amount of people who disagreed and told him not to come back could of impacted his confidence and now he's left unsure if it was a good idea to return or not.
What's going on now turned into the perfect opportunity for Dungey to have exactly what he was looking for then but with the added benefit of having no expectations and only commiting to two rounds. That will give him the chance to get his feet wet and see where he stands.
I would expect that if the first two rounds go well, he will be glad to stick it out for the entire season. If things don't go as planned and he's unhappy with where he's finishing then he can make his exit without letting anyone down.
I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Dungey running top 5 and even better if he sticks around for the season.
I'm sure he's aware of his laptimes and endurance has never been an issue. If he was way off the pace I don't think he'd be coming back. I could see the first two races going a little rough just getting use to the pace, heart rate, etc. again but knock those cobwebs out and I think we could see a familiar Dungey by mid season.
To my knowledge the 2017 sx title was the only time he won the championship without the most wins in a given series as well.
Pretty amazing what KTM can do when the win bonus/ championship bonus money doesn’t get spent for the SX season. Like everything, it all comes back to the dollar, and I think this is a GREAT use of leftover racing budget!
