Since you’re only as fast as your last race in our industry, I just had fun collecting some data from Washougal from the potential MXDN riders + a sleeper who came out, imo, Saturday knowing Anderson is not available…

Moto 1s:

-First American 250: Justin Cooper 16 laps in 35:34 (Hunter’s time) + 38 sec = 36:14. Average lap times: 2’17”7
-Second America 250: Seth Hammaker 16 laps in Hunter’s time + 41sec = 36:17. Average lap times: 2”18’0

-First American 450: Eli Tomac 16 laps in 35:37(with a crash). Average lap times: 2’15”6
-Second America 450: Chase Sexton 16 laps in 35:36 (with a crash). Average lap times: 2’15”8
-First potential MXDN 250: Justin Barcia 16 laps in 35:37 + 47sec = 36:24. Average lap times: 2’18”2
-Second potential MXDN 250: Christian Craig 16 laps in 35:37 + 48sec = 36:25. Average lap times: 2’17”9

Moto 2s:

-First American 250: Justin Cooper 16 laps in 36:11 (faster than his 1st moto overall time). Average lap times: 2’17”8
-Second America 250: Max Vohland 16 laps in Justin’s time + 30sec = 36:41. Average lap times: 2”19’5

-First American 450: Chase Sexton 16 laps in 35:24. Average lap times: 2’14”8
-Second America 450: Eli Tomac 16 laps in 35:32. Average lap times: 2’15”3
-First potential MXDN 250: Christian Craig 16 laps in 35:24 + 59sec = 36:23. Average lap times: 2’18”0
-Second potential MXDN 250: Justin Barcia 16 laps in 35:24 + 99sec = 37:03 (with a crash). Average lap times: 2’20”9
-New MXDN contender/sleeper: Ryan Dungey 16 laps in 35:24 + 52sec = 36:36. Average lap times: 2’17’7

Make you own conclusion. Put in fact the amount of time a 450 rider would lose racing a 250 and how much better the track was for the 250 riders in Washougal since their motos were before the 450s…

I advocated with Sexton/Anderson in 450 and Eli in 250 which most people think I’m crazy for… With Anderson out and the way JC32 rode in moto 2, in timed practice, his usual great starts, his powerful bike and the fact he’s getting his mojo back, he should maybe get back in the MXDN 250 ride convo… And why not add Dungey in the mix after his Washougal performance if they want to drop someone. He was in the last USA MXDN winning team after all...

I agree with your opinion about Dungey.
Did you see his interview with ML after Washougal and how much he was grinning?

He is hungry.

Edit: Sorry...it was the RacerX Interview...at the end of the RD segment you couldn't take the smile off his face smile

Sexton/Dungey on 450s and Eli on a Star 250... Sounds like a good combo to me

|

Need to see another week of J Cooper killing it before I'm onboard with him being considered. (...and I'm a fan of his)

I must admit... Dungey is an interesting pick. I just wonder how well he would do dropping down...he's been "off" a 250 a lot longer than the other 450 guys. Truly... It would be epic to see Dunge on MXoN team 5-6 years after retirement.

I’ve been advocating for Cooper all along. And if not Cooper, Dungey based on his consistent finishes. Good post. I gave it a big time thumbs up.

Dungey and Sexton 450.

Tomac 250

I've pretty much jumped from Craig to Cooper, after Washougal. I just needed to see something close to the normal JCoop, from him. And after Washougal, it appears he's trending that way. So I'm to the point where he makes the most sense. Plus, the only reason we were even debating this was because he has had a rough year finding himself, coming back from injury. So if he's close to normal, he's the guy for me.

|

7/25/2022 3:49 PM

Cooper still seems to be all about the start. He tends to stay in the same position he starts in. That's a serious problem and at least with the other guys we can move through the pack. I can assure you that Eli would move through almost everyone even on a 250. What are you guys going to say if Cooper starts 15th and ends up 12th? None of the other riders will do that

|

7/25/2022 3:53 PM

JCoop has - good moto this season so far and everyone is on the band wagon? Craig is still a better option .

|

7/25/2022 4:10 PM

Nice post! It would be interesting to see J Coop, Barcia, Craig, Dungy, and Tomac all ride a 250 at Glen Helen all at the same time to see who can turn the fastest laps. Then maybe it would be comparing apples to apples. I am warming up to the idea of Tomac on a 250 also, however right now he looks to be a top 3 rider as well as Sexton. Our 250 rider just needs a good showing is all. Either way it should be good racing and fun to watch.

|

7/25/2022 4:20 PM

2 overall wins during the whole 2021 season and 1 race win in 2022 so far..

what happens if J.coop goes 5-5 next week? or finishes 40+ seconds behind the leaders?
is he still going to be in the discussion?
or is 1 race result the determining factor

without a holeshot.. he finishes where he starts.

|

7/25/2022 4:49 PM

Eli,Sexton and Cooper could get it done.
We'd only need 1 good moto from Cooper and 2 from Eli & Sexton.

Tomac
Sexton
Craig on the 250 first pick

My problem with your thinking is that you want every team member to fall in the same area of finish whereas I think if you keep Eli and Sexton on 450s they are both in the mix of winning each race they’re in. If they both do that, doesn’t really matter what the 250 rider does other than completely shit the bed both races.

Cooper has shown he has sped but he’s also shown he is very inconsistent. At this point, I think as long as we have Eli and Chase on 450’s, we could still win with either Barcia, Craig or Cooper on the 250. First time in a long time we have a solid team no matter which way you shake it.

|

7/25/2022 7:03 PM

It has to be Craig or Cooper.

DV - Would you accept if asked the Manager position for the USA MXdN team?

|

7/25/2022 7:12 PM

At this point, they should just let chase and Eli pick the final member and let them choose which size bike they ride.

|

7/25/2022 7:35 PM

Eli 250, Chase 450 & Dung Open.

I've heard a lot of reasons why Team USA has lost the last ten years but not having a strong team is a new one to me. Least we've gotten that excuse out of the way for 2022 so that leaves the track and the weather. I'm hoping for good weather and the track preparation being acceptable to Team USA and their fans Hoping to reduce fans coming up with every reason but the right one why Team USA no longer dominates MXoN:

No shame in accepting the US's focus on SX and one day Nationals have created the best SX racers on the planet but at the expense of our MX skills.

|

7/26/2022 6:49 AM

As picky as eli is about his bike you want to put him on a 250??? Sexton/tomac 450 and craig on 250. Thats the move

Dungey MX1 , Tomac MX2 , Chase MX3 .

Reason I put Dungey MX1 is that he gets a break, doesn't race 2 motos in a row. He's been retired 5 years, he could probably use the break more than Chase who would be in better shape.

|

7/26/2022 8:23 AM

Cooper showed that foot is back to being good enough to win again.... and, he beat the Lawrence bros straight up... who else can say that this season?

I was rooting for Anderson, as he really gives it his all at MXDN.... but he needs back surgery...

Dungey..... also a great pick..... the Diesel always has given his all at MXDN.. and he truly has elite level speed...

This.
Eli and Chase are potentially going to go 1-2 in both motos. Maybe even favored to do so. No disrespect to the GP greats, who I honestly think are a huge threat, but the speed these two guys are displaying has to at least equal what the euros are going to bring. Add in the homefield advantage and I'd say our MX1 and MX3 results are going to be fine if those are the guys. Get us a single top 5 in MX2 and it's basically game over.

EDIT: I just realized the scoring goes on actual moto finish now. Even better. All you have to do as a 250 guy is get somewhere in the top half of the riders, and odds are you'll beat most of your class. (Any Vialle/Villopoto/O'Mara rides notwithstanding.)

Some are on the same boat as me: Tomac and Sexton on 450s could go 1-1, 1-2. If so you could put effin me on a 250 and I’d do enough to mail it in.

Last year Italy won on 37 pts, in 2019 Netherlands won on 18 pts, in 2018 France won on 32 pts (and remember Netherlands got third with basically only 4 scoring motos due to 1-1, 1-2), in 2017 France won on 20 pts, 2016 France won on 29 pts…

In my opinion no other country can field a team (this year) that can go 1-1, 1-2, and even something in the ballpark of 1-3, 3-4 would leave some wiggle room for the 250 guy I think.

Now, the ball is round (unless you play football with your hands) so anything can happen, but not putting Tomac in MX1 and Sexton in MX-Open is a big mistake in my opinion.

Still thinking it's between Craig and Cooper. I'm betting they choose Craig.

I’d put Sexton on the HRC RC250F.

He’d use everything the bike has & probably O/A his Moto’s.
