When was the last you remember a Japanese bike not on a Supercross podium. I'm sure Davey will have an article on that topic soon!

Good, maybe they will discount their bikes to sell more..my lap times don't care which bike I'm on.

Makes ya wonder doesn't it? Back in the day they would pay nearly any amount of money for a win, now days, you gotta wonder if the higher-ups at the big four even care.

I wonder if Suzuki wishes they hadn't snubbed Roger and Ryan that year after winning the title.

How stupid can you be to let the man go knowing what he did for ever race team he ever worked at and think that decision ain't going to come back on you.

If you were a team, how much would you pay for Rodgers note book with chassis info?

I think Jim Holley predicted "an all-Austrian podium" on the Detroit pre-show.

KTM sales some where around 35,000 bikes world wide 2005, last year sold 185,000 motorcycles. Growing about 15% a year. KTM sells what enthusiasts want, not what bean counters suggest. E start off road 2 stroke, check. 350 four stroke, check. 198 pound 150, check. 50, 65, 85, check. Honda 150, 250 and 450. Kind of boring, Yamaha has a clue though. Honda should have a contender next year with Roczen and HRC. Tomac and kawi will get the KHI figured out for the nationals. Maybe JGR on Husqvarnas for 2018.
Always been a KTM and Husky fan going back to the 70's. (except for when allesi rode ktm's)

I was talking about the 70s and 80s, when dirt bike sales peaked. But true, your comment is a good observation

I think what would be more useful is each manufacturer's sales graph, not just thoughts around KTM/Husky and Honda....

It's a first.

Imagine if you had told someone back in the mid 1990s or even the early 2000s that in 15 years, KTM and Husqvarna would be sweeping the podiums in the U.S?

They'd have laughed at you.

Did they really peak then? If that's the case, what caused the sales to decline into the 90s, then take off again early 2000s?

All the dudes that were born and rode in the 80's knocked up their girlfriends and had to sell their bikes. They all started riding again when jr was old enough to ride lol

So what can account for the 10-year spike in sales?

Will it happen again?

I think that is about right. I bet if you went thru the pits at a amateur race and asked mini dads if they rode /raced a high percentage would say yes.

But,those peaks won't happen again, this generation, the millennials or whatever will not be mini dads. Their parents take care of their kids, they never move out of mom and dads, never won't to work hard ,want it all gave to them by the o's ,billary's and burnie's.

Fully agree with your assessment of millennials.

As someone else mentioned above, it is nice to see bikes without a street bike frame winning races. I've hated those bulky aluminum bastards ever since the first model.

A lot of the sales growth between 1990 and 2008 is related to the boom in Harley-Davidson and choppers...Harley went from 50,000 bikes a year in the late 80s to 350,000 in 2008. Brands like Victory popped up and had similar explosive growth, not to mention all the "custom" bike builders that popped up tents and started selling some volume of bikes.

Big boom came from all the 50-somethings who had never ridden a motorcyle before, spent too much time watching reality TV, overspent on "chopper" then typically wadded it and themselves up into a tree.

It would be interesting to see motorcycle sales of sport related bikes (ie: road racers and dirt bikes) from the 70s through to today.

KTM is taking advantage of the big four in Japan because they set up a system and made deals rather than tried to provide the bikes the riders wanted! Good for KTM for earning their customers!

In our group of riders nearly all are on ktm/husky bikes except one and thats only cuz he cant afford one yet. 10 years ago we woulda laughed at anyone that wouldve aaid that. They make what we want. Hell even on the street the euro's actually make bikes with more features and performance, in the 80's and 90's this was not the case.
