I found this on craigslist a few miles from me. All original parts including tires. He listed it fOr $4000. Too high?
The Shop
If I see one more CL for sale pic with a bike wedged between a lawn mower a duffle bag and six or seven shovels I'm going to freak.
Spring is coming.......and THIS time of year , the bikes sell like hot cakes!!
So if any of you guys plan on selling....get those things cleaned up and put em out there.
If you do buy it search for the MXA test on it and follow their recomendations as it is very accurate.... Yes they say to add a tooth to the rear sprocket
The fact of the matter is this. $4000 is not a laughable price. It's not like $6500 where you don't even want to approach the guy to have a discussion. In my opinion, $4000 is at the top of the market, with $2500 being at the bottom of the market for a bike like that. Your average deal on the occasional cream puff that pops up from time to time is probably somewhere in the middle = $3200 range or so.
I would also advise people to buy the nicest version of whatever you are looking at that you can afford. You will be hard pressed to buy a run-of-the-mill 2006 KX250 and restore it to that level of quality for less than $4000. And if you do, you would have to seriously consider your time and energy for what could amount to a couple hundred bucks savings.
If you really want it, I would talk to him.
That clutch cover looks to have either been replaced with a new one or someone put an aftermarket one on when the bike was new. There doesn't seem to be as much wear as on the frame. Doesn't match up.

Also, something that I have seen is that the dirtbike markets vary drastically by region. Just because Joe bought the same bike for $xxxx.xx in California, that doesn't mean anything about the price it would go for in NC. That being said, don't pay what you aren't comfortable with. I think you made the right move offering $3000 and see what happens.
Three years ago, I drove down to Utah from Canada and picked up a KTM 150 for $3000. With exchange at the time, and import fees and gas, it probably cost my closer to $3400. I rode that bike for three years up in Canada and just sold it last week for $3600 (and I have seen the same year same model listed up here for upwards of $4500).

We put the pipe on so I could ride it and not dent/scratch the stock one.
Put 3 years of MX racing and riding on it, 100+ hours later the only things I have replaced are top ends, and chain and sprockets. I love the bike, and I'll never sell it even though I have a 2014 250SX right next to in in my garage.
What I am getting at, is that bike is awesome, and if I wanted a good 2-stroke I would plop the coin down and ride off into the sunset, even at $4k.
Shorten the shock internally 10mm and the bike is all around awesome.
