Hey Guys,

I've searched on the forum for this but there a minimal answers and some are pretty old or not as helpful as I'd wished. Doesn't seem to be many responses under the Photo/Vid section either :/

I basically want a camera for good quality photos, ability to film at a higher FPS for video and stay under $600 new (for the body) or used.

Any thoughts on a list of models that I can sink my teeth into and start my web search on?

Thank you!!!

why do you want to film as well? looks like you can get a used 7D body for around 600$, which is a crop camera. Or step it up a bit and get a used 5DII body for sub 1k and full frame.
But after that, are you going to be doing sports/action photography? because your lens cost may surprise you for a decent focal length.

I literally just want to replace my iphone and have my wife take pics while out riding that has a fast enough shutter speed for jumping and corners ect...I don't need a 5d or 7d since the cost is too high...What would be bad about this? http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-Rebel-T5-Accessory/dp/B00J34YO92/ref=sr…

Pentax K5iis...best camera for that price! Weather proof and better built than cannon and Nikon. You can use a Tamron 70-200mm lens...

I guess as I'm looking around I might stick with Canon or Nikon just for simplicity if I rent or interchange common parts but that camera looks good! I guess the burst rate and the fps is hard to find for my price point eh?

Oh I gotcha. I thought you were looking for something to get into some legit photography or something and not just to play around with. That Canon Rebel is pretty low end but obviously it does the job for some people.
ALL of those accessories are pure garbage. The tripod, filters, flash. Like real bad, but you probably wont ever use them.
Just that model Rebel body WITH a lens is 350$. You cant expect much from that, at all.
Honestly I'd rather purchase something used. Your bang for the buck is going to be a lot better.
Something like a used 60D body I think would be a good choice on a tried and true body. Then try and pick up a lens like an 18-135 or something.
keep in mind for any kind of sports or action where you cant get up close, you'd want something in the 50mm+ range on a crop sensor camera at minimum. So the stock 18-55mm lens is going to be ok for shooting photos around the house but trying to get an upclose photo when your 200' away isnt going to work to great.

Great info! Thank you, and yeah I'm totally game for the used market too! I'll search for some used 5/6/7d's

That's a good deal. The Rebel T5i has amazing video quality for the price. It would be my choice.

honestly dont worry about 'burst rate and fps'. if youre picking from camera bodies in the sub 300$ range thats going to be your crutch not burst rate. by far.

You'll want a camera that does 1080p @ 60fps.

Here's a list of DSLR cameras that fulfill those reqs.

Here's a list of mirrorless cameras that do the same thing.

Do you have any lenses right now or starting from scratch?

the nomenclature is a bit weird on the canons.

5D is fullframe older model with no video
5DII is fullframe with video. $$$
5DIII is $$$$$$

6D is new, $$$$

7D is crop sensor, more 'hobby level' but has video.

the only ones that are decent and in your price range are:

60D, 7D (not mark ii, just the original).

You can take great pics with a cheap used rig. As far as actually getting good pics, just remember it's the chef that makes the meal, not the stove. No matter how old, new, fancy, basic, cheap, or expensive the equipment is.

Cameras and prices are changing so fast you wouldn't want to look too far back at threads for information relevant now. A good shooter can take good pictures with any consumer digital dslr from about 04 or 05 on, and any film camera way older.

Keep in mind that the big money in "good" photography is in glass, not bodies.

Most of the photos on my website were shot with a 7D. It makes really good photos, and pro-level video.

I've owned three cameras, technically four; 5DmkIII, 7DmkII (TWICE), and a Rebel T5i. If you're considering the Rebel T5i/T5, definitely go for it... I had no complaints about that thing AT ALL, but wanted to upgrade so I got a 7DMKII. I honestly think the T5i is better than the 7DMKII hahah.

I'm a Nikon guy myself.
Just start reading. Very useful professional input.
I have been shooting for years and I still revert back to His site for some good reading and learning.

As far a purchasing I use B&H Photo.

I shoot with a t3i body and it does the job. Now granted I have a few grand in lenses too but you can get by fairly cheap.
For instance, the 70-300 f4.5-6 lens is about $100 and it will take plenty good photos once you know how to set your camera up.

here's a couple random shots of mine for reference:
(disclaimer, they are screenshots because I don't have the files on this computer)

EDIT: just noticed that you bought the t5i. I thing you made a great choice! If you have any questions I"m always open to sharing what I've learned as far as camera setup and what not... but I"m not master photographer, that's for sure.

Since you have the camera, the best money you can spend from this point is on good lens. That will take your photos to the next level...

oh god does it ever!!!

Since I've started shooting, I"ve bought the 70-200mm f2.8 IS and the 24-70mm f2.8 usm. There's a few grand already and still planning to get a few more small lensess. Not to mention the Manfrotto tripod, the incase camera bag, the speedlights, etc, etc. It gets expensive QUICK!!!
