You are correct that EPP is very good with multiple impacts. Much better than EPS. In the amount used in a helmet the material may cost more per pound but it’s not a big number in these amounts. Curious why you think the manufacturing is more difficult. Assuming you mean vs EPS. The two materials mold in similar ways both being bead foams. Using steam and pressure. The expansion of the EPS and EPP beads use different gases.
EPS can get better numbers in a single hit but is brittle in nature so the EPP performs much better in multiple hits.

Yes, I work in structural foams for a company that uses. EPP, EPE, Brock, XEPE. We don’t do EPS but know it well.

I wonder which helmet is the violet in those graphs. Bell Flex?

I assume that the yellow MIPS is a 6D helmet with MIPS? Otherwise that doesn't mean anything since MIPS can be found on so many different helmets with different characteristics. Or does MIPS(the company) have an own reference helmet for testing?

According to my interview with Bob Weber, there are certain tests the ATR-1 and ATR-2 are on par with each other and few where the ATR-2 is around 20-25% better. From an overall standpoint, they're claim is the ATR-2 is around 15% better at controlling and managing impact/rotational energy.

Thank for the video Micheal. Exciting stuff happening, 6d deserves a huge round of applause for bringing us the new technology.
I'd also like to see the ama require rotational energy systems in all helmets used for racing. Force the manufacturers to at least adopt mips if nothing else.

Is it any smaller? I guess I need to see one in person. I can't do the whole bobble head shape of the older one.

Intersting info, thanks!
The epp helmet I use has no shell, so the complete helmet is just one piece of epp foam (save for the straps). The manufacturer claimed that it took a lot of r&d to get the forming right. Maybe this was just because there was no shell to expand into and that the foam piece has look perfect from a angles. That was why I assumed it's more complicated/expensive.

This is the helmet I'm talking about. Petzl sirocco. Very ugly looking, but it weighs less than 150g!

#434,
We have one of those helmets at our office. We don't mold it. But might be our material in Europe. Cant remember. I think the design of that helmet is what makes the molding more difficult more than the material. Hard not to have die locks with all the cut outs or adding action in the tooling which is expense. It is a light helmet. US molders tend to shy away from helmets for legal reasons. Which is a bummer.

Yes , you're right, it's a complicated mould, than that's where the price comes from.
Petzl has now a updated model with epp all around the sides and an eps pieces with a small plastic cap on top for a lower profile. Seems to be the way to combine both materials.

Bell has had an EPP layer in the Moro 9 flex for a couple of years now. 6D is just now catching up...

This is why Bell has been using epp for a few years now. You can thank them for bringing epp to motocross helmets.

How’s everyone liking their atr-2? Thinking of snagging one soon, possibly around cyber Monday or whenever our industry has the close out sales.
Either way, will either be buying bell moto 9 flex or atr-2

Love it! It is crazy light and the liner is very comfy. I hope I do not get to test the ODS technology in a crash but it gives you confidence knowing you have it.

Over 1400grams is crazy light? Compared to a freaking boulder?

I have yet to try one on, wanted to buy the ATR-1 when it first came out but it didn't fit my head well, hoping the ATR-2 fits better.

Ya I’m hoping the shape of my head fits in it well. From the reviews the helmet grabs the top/back of your head better than the first, and the cheek pads extend a little more and sort of grab your cheeks better if that makes sense

I have both ATR-1 and ATR-2, the ATR-2 is a bit lighter and seems to get better air flow, though the average joe would'nt notice the differences between the two. Either one is a great choice. I've had a few diggers while wearing a 6D and never a concussion, though the rest of my body...

I purchased an ATR-2 a few weeks ago and have ridden in it twice now. It ventilates well, and I was expecting an adjustment coming from my previous helmet. It was a really quick transition.

I was really on the fence between 6D, TLD, Arai and Bell. I tried on a few Bells and couldn't get a good fit. Then I tried the 6D and TLD back to back and felt that although the TLD SE4 looked flashier, the 6D seemed higher quality.

TLD seems to build all of their research around the MIPS shell without incorporating any other major safety factors. 6D takes everything into account, from their proprietary tech in the shell to the collarbone "protection" (not sure the right word).

Unless they update soon (they will)
The shoei tech is essentially 25 years old minus the shell carbon. I loved my shoei - but am totally sold on other helmets now.

6d has forced other helmet makers to move the chains forward, leatt, mips inclusion in multiple brands, bell flex, and a new fly helmet coming out as well

its great for the consumer

I think our bigger issue looming is bikes - increased hp and suspension has upped riding speeds - and injuries

Go ride a modern 125 which is leaps better than the mid 90s 125s... and it feels slow....
Yet the racing was still great and the seperation still existed

In the helmet discussion should be a cc reduction discussion, the current stock ktm250f will out lap time any stock japense 250 2 stroke, a once formidable bike

How you can call one of the heaviest if not the heaviest helmet out there "crazy light" is beyond me, that's the reason I asked what you compared it to. I could have done it in a different manner pinch
