New 250 Pointing Out Rules

Edited Date/Time 4/22/2017 6:29pm
According to Steve Matthes there are some new rules in the 250 class.

"New rule in 250SX has passed. 4 years of minimum points needed until u move up from 3 (Marty's back!) & no matter what u can defend title" -@pulpmx on twitter.

What's your thoughts?

What if you have won two titles already? Can you defend a third, fourth, and fifth title? If it's "No matter what you can defend the title," as long as you keep winning the title you don't have to move up.

Interesting theory, I'm sure they won't allow that but funny you find a loop hole already.

Personally I think they should allow Mookie to race 250s another year, no doubt he definitely ended up making less money this year than he would have had he been eligible for 250s again.

The timing of this rule change is interesting. Were Davalos and/or Mcelrath going to miss tonite's race without this rule change? Lots of folks were saying Davalos was going to be out with an injury. He seems to be ok in practice.

Matthes just worded it short for Twitter...it means you can defend once if you won a title on your third year of competition (so if you win the title in your third year of 250 SX year, you can defend the title one time for a fourth season).

Currently if you won a title in your first year of 250 SX competition, you were allowed two more years (the Trey Canard rule), if you win your second year...you were allowed to defend once. If you won in your third year or more (4th, 5th, 6th, etc) and had passed the points threshold, you would be bumped. Which is what happened to Broc Tickle while he still had a year on his contract with Pro Circuit....sorta the same with Jake Weimer, Wil Hahn, Malcolm Stewart.

I'd have to check, but I think the rule might've been you were bumped if you won the title third year or more regardless...like Malcolm Stewart.

Either way, I think it's a good move to add the ability to always defend the title once. If that was the case, Malcolm Stewart would still have a ride this year to defend the title. Many of the riders that win at that point in their career would probably still like one more year on a 250 to be the guy and defend, hopefully getting another solid year before going 450. Plus, the manufacturers will love it because they can better market a defending title winner when they're still on a 250 (especially if they defend on the same coast with the #1 plate).

McElrath was safe from pointing out, but if he had won a title this year he would've had to move up...while he was still under contract with TLD KTM for 2018 and they wouldn't be able to support him in the 450 class.

Thanks for the clarification ML. Will riders who pointed out under the previous rule be allowed to return to the 250 class?

I'm guessing they could petition...but not many have pointed out.

Usually they've been bumped for titles.

After I posed the question, I was thinking about who this might affect from the 450 class. Off the top of my head, I couldn't think of anyone except maybe Mookie and Webb.

With this rule change, no current 250 riders will be forced up for 2018, correct?

This was posted on Martins instagram back in January.

Any truth to this?

I wouldn't be completely surprised if Savatgy takes another 250 year but I have a feeling Hill will move up.

Not a hater, I dont think there should be any type of move-up rule at all. But if the rules get branded like the "Canard" rule that ML said, then it seems like this one is for those two riders. Either way the pointing out rules are silly and they seem to change whenever they dont fit the current scenario.
