"I was stoked about every improved area of the bike, especially considering Kawi engineers kept the personality traits I liked and added nearly everything it was missing. And of all the new 2005 models I've ridden so far, this is the biggest one-year improvement."

I'd say the '04 might be a little more manageable.
I got it for 1200 back in 02 with hopes of rebuilding and it has been sitting ever since.
It's real beat up, I was excited at the undertaking. Just never got around to it, and have to move it to consolidate space. Anyone know anyone who wants it let me know. haha
Now to the subject: His has more hit everywhere, top to bottom. Mine has more "roll-on" power, easier to control the power for sure. Before you buy a bike, you need to consider what kind of riding you do primarily. We primarily trail ride, so both of us like the '04 better for the milder powerband. Both of us are faster on my bike in the woods.
On the track, I'd take his bike as would he. If you aren't on the throttle 100% on my '04, you can get some bogging from low to mid where his bike raps up so quickly you won't have that problem. Mine is certainly easier to ride!

The '87 KX250s had that smokin' bottom/mid range motor as did the '88...had all three.
The '05 was an awesome steed. Don't believe they changed 'em much 'till last ones in '07.
i had new 05 250smokers last year (new) for $2998.00
Back in the day, I had an 86 CR250 and a riding buddy had a new 87 KX250 that had a normal setup in regards to fork height and shock sag. We rode each other bikes a few times and what really stood out about the KX is how poorly it cornered for me compared to the CR. It felt like the chassis would begrudgingly follow the direction you'd steer towards where in comparison cornering on the CR seemed pretty much effortless. That has been the only KX I've ridden and it pretty much turned me off on green bikes for quite awhile.

Rode KXs because my '84KX125 waas the best bike and stayed with the KXs thru '89 and got great deals...I rode a guy named Tom Sweeney who was Open Pro '87 KX500 and though that was even better than my 250....and he liked my 250 better than his 500..loved those motors; holeshots bonestock.
When the '90 YZ 250 came out.....the best handling mo'fo bike ever rode.....If Alan Berluti, McKenna, Coupe and few others wouldn't have lined up, mighta had a shot....
Might have.....lol.
