Seems like there has been a few issues with bikes running dry of coolant and such but still no DNFs. Makes you wounder how long can a bike run with no coolant, how long could a bike run with no oil, ect.... Sounds like these modern day 4 strokes are a lot more durable than we think.

Raced an enduro two weeks ago and was near the same minute as another dude on a crf 250. Saw him at the end of the day and he told me he had gone down early in the day and ridden the next 4-5 hours with the bike running "odd". Finally took a look at it during a gas stop and saw there was no coolant left. He dnf'd but bike was still running after who knows how long with no coolant.

Fairly sure it was Osborne's bike that lost coolant at Spring Creek in moto1 and he still managed a solid finish. Looked very good for Husky's resume.

A bike with no oil is not going to last long.

A hose came off and it was dead out of coolant.

...But a lot longer than you might think. We did a test at a dealership I used to work at, using a clapped-out old Honda streetbike and the dyno. We drained all the oil and then put it on the dyno for a full-throttle run with someone sitting on it. The thing lasted a good two or three minutes before it even started smoking. (It went downhill fast after that.)

I went to change the oil in my bike once and when I pulled the drain plug, nothing came out. To this day, I have no clue where the oil went. I vividly recall putting oil in it the prior race and didn't do anything else to the oil after that. No clue how long it went without oil but it ran for years after that incident.

It was reported that it was one of the rubber half-circles under the valve cover that came out.

I raced an entire enduro with no coolant (because I'm an idiot)...by the end it would idle...but I finished.

I had to rebuild the entire motor after.

In the early 2000s I had an 03 crf 450. In the 4 stroke class, my 3rd Moto I had to finish top 6 to make it. I was passing for 2nd on the last lap and my bike blew up at the bottom of the ski jump. Found a water pump seal went sometime during the Moto. It was probably only a 4 or 5 lap Moto. Kaboom.

When it’s your year, it’s your year, man. Ask The Smashing Pumpkins how well 1995 went for them. Everything they touched turned to gold including a double CD! Well, in years past Osborne’s valve cover gasket blowing out would’ve definitely led to a DNF but not this year. He nursed the bike home and then for good measure caught and passed Savatgy from a ways back in the second moto to take the moto win. He’s so hot right now.

My mate lost all the coolant in his 2016 CRF450, lasted the entire moto and still runs fine now i..e no rebuild after...just filled it back up with coolant after it cooled down and everything was fine.

As seems most of the experience here in this thread, I think that if you had a muddy race/tight course race, the bike may struggle to keep cool with no coolant and blow up...but a dry and open race where it has more chance to get more air cooling then the less likely its an issue.

I cant see ANY bike surviving more than 3-4 mins with no oil though, even if it did it would need a rebuild after.
