It's the time of year when I start taking my son to NC over the winter to ride. We typically stay around the East Bend/ 421mx area in Yadkinsville and Winston-Salem.

I also got my son into MTB as something we do together and was trying to find some trails in that area to ride in the mornings before the tracks open up.

I saw the Hobby Trails is about 15 mins away from our hotel we stay in on Saturday's. Any others in the area?

*edit just found Tanglewood Park is 6 mins from the hotel also.

Not a big mountain biker myself, but I when I lived in Boone I went to a couple spots out in Wilkesboro with some friends, can’t remember what they were called. Might be a little further out than what you’re looking for, though.

I'm looking for with in 30 mins of a track or hotel. He is 7, goes to bed at 9pm and up between 645 and 7am every day... even my days off. lol So from 7am until 1130 ish he is going bonkers in the hotel. So I figure this will be something fun for us to do.

Wilkesboro is right at 30 mins from our Friday night hotel so that might be do able

Some of the best mountain biking I've experienced was the trail system in Lake Norman State Park.

This. The Disney World of mountain biking IMO. Although some of the climbing might be a little much for a 7 year old.

i've lived in asheville for the past 8yrs and mtb. let me know if you make it this way and i can point you in the right directions.

lots of pisgah would be too hard for kids, but bent creek has fantastic trails that are tame but still very kid friendly and a lot of fun.

i have two boys, 5 & 7, and they have been riding here since they were 3-4 and on push bikes.

Cool. I try to make it up to Dupont every chance I get, and I've done Tsali several times. I've actually ridden Bent Creek, but it was back in 05'. I've ridden some Pisgah, but not much.

Great that you get your boys out on the trails. I started my son riding at about 7 years old on a 20" Marin. He rode with me a good bit until he stepped away from it in his teens, but now that he's in college he started back riding and rides all the time...and loves it. It's one of those things that I'm really grateful that I handed down to him.

dupont is awesome too, its a little tamer than bent creek, but more isolated/better scenery

our riding time thus far has been amongst the best times we've had. kids can do way more than you'd think, if you start them early and let them build into what they are comfortable with. good times.

AllTrails App uses your location to identify MTB and hiking trails near you. It has specific filters and offers good interaction so feedback and ratings for trails is current. I was out west for the month of September and it help me find and ride some really great trails.

The Bicycle Post trail in Greenville NC is awesome and very kid-friendly.

Bicycle Post Trail Website

Plus, eastern North Carolina has some incredible sandy tracks. Greenville NC is an awesome college town, and you’d be 10 minutes from Cow Branch MX, or about an hour from BlackJack MX, 5 Points MX or West Craven MX. PM me if you'd like more information, I'm from 6 hours North as well.

I live in Winston, and ride 2-3 times a week. In the close radius there is Hobby Park (about a mile from me), Warrior Creek in Wilkesboro, and Moore's Springs which is up by Rural Hall at Hanging Rock state park. Moore's Springs is easily the best in my opinion, you actually get to climbing a bit with about 300ft of elevation change. There are a few other spots with small amounts of trail but those are the main ones. If you want bigger rides you need to head west, the closest is Kitsuma in Black Mountain. It's very easily accessible and a really fun trail with 2k of elevation in a 10 mile lap.

Also, you NEED to ride motos at Silver Valley MX in Lexington. They are only open Saturdays and it's weather permitting, but it is honestly the best track I've ever ridden (which includes Thunder Valley, Pala, Cauhilla, etc). The operator down there is a true track artist and I have yet to see a day that was't maintained and prepped to perfection. Feel free to PM me and I'll give you my number, if you guys want to ride either mtb or moto, I'll show you around!

EDIT- Just saw that your son is 7, which changes things up a bit. Hobby probably moves to top recommendation, as the climbs will be the most manageable there. Also, Silver Valley is a big track with deep prep and no kids track, so it might be a bit much depending on his level.

Does the winter NC weather allow mountain biking? I'm about 8 hours north of there, and we typically are hammered with cold and snow from December to March.

we ride more in the winter if anything. many trails in pisgah (our national forest) in the western/mountain area of the state are seasonal, and are only open for mtb from oct-apr, hikers during the rest of the year. we get 2-3 snows a year, with it on the ground for only a few days, on average.

Low country Carolinas typical winter day is in the 50’s but we do get about a 2 week spell of below freezing.

If you're up by Wilkesboro, Warrior Creek is really fun. (+1 for needing to check out MTB Project.)

Near Charlotte? Renaissance Park, and near the whitewater center (I can't find the name of the trails) are both good.

Told the boy that we could do some MTB before riding each day down there. He was thrilled!

if you're in the good ol YC then you have to drive on over to Wilkes county (Kerr Scott) for some of my favorite trails. the BMCC does a most excellent job of trail building. if it's too wet those 2 trails will be closed, but normally Dark Mountain is open regardless

Warrior Creek (14 mile loop)

Horton's Hollar (6 mile loop)

Dark Mountain (6 mile loop, keep a close eye on the trail blaze)
https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/781944/dark-mountain
(Dark Mountain was home to an incredible 24 hour MTB series)

pretty sure those JGR boys hit Warrior Creek from time to time.

*edit* oops.. left off MST
Moore's Spring Trail (6 mile loop) up near Hanging Rock State park
