Super fun read. Sent the article to my dad and him and I have been dialoging about it. The write up about the 1984 CR500 made me appreciate even more my 1983 CR480.

Excellent write up!

I'm sure this will have people losing their minds.... I had a '96 CR250, it was the WORST bike I have ever rode! Handled terrible, no low end and only moderate mid hit, and suspension that wasn't strong enough for a 4th grader.

I've had two 83 480's and they are excellent bikes. The only thing the 84 did better was stop. Other than that the 83 kills it.

good read as usual. I never owned a 98 cr125, I had an 05 though, and it was like it'd had its guts ripped out of it.

Turned well, but was so slow!

Its weird really, im actually thinking of getting another one, just because it was so slow, made it so much fun to ride.

Your probably right you will get killed for that. LOL

I had an 96 CR250R and I thought it was a good bike. I put a FMF pipe on it and that really beefed up the low end power. The suspension was not as good as the RM that year but it was certainly was not terrible. I didn't think it handled bad either back then. A little headshake but good turning. It was light years better than the 97. Funny how some bikes feel so different to people sometimes.

Really? That was one of the best motors I've ever ridden. Very electric and smooth powerband, no huge hit anywhere but was deceptively fast and bullet proof. The front headshake was really bad on it but it did turn on a dime. Always wanted to get a 94 or 95 YZ250. The Antietam MX track in Maryland had a demo day and had a chance to ride a 94 YZ250, but for some reason ended up buying a 94KX250. I broke everything on it, most unreliable bike I've ever had.

I had a 94YZ250 and loved it to death. I wish I still had it. It felt super slow, yet I got more holeshots and wins on it than any other bike I owned. No matter how rough the track it was always smooth and stayed strait. To me that bike was perfect, BUT i remember at the time there were alot of YZ haters around that did not like that bike.

Wow small world. I was there at that 94 Antietam Demo day. I think Pete's cycle put it on if I remember correct. I rode all the bikes that day and loved the 94 KX250 by far the most. I actually ended up grabbing a handful on the 94 YZ250 out of a tight corner in the back section and looping the thing out like a total squid. It was right in front of one of the dudes from the dealership and I just wanted to go hide under a rock after crashing his brand new YZ. Good times.

Tblazier, that's funny, small world for sure. I only rode the 94 YZ 250 and 94 KX125. I bought the 94 KX250 because I was a big Mike Larocco fan. It was a good bike. just everything wore out fast. I heard some expert broke the cases on the YZ125 and that was the last year they did the demos.

You left out my '86 RM125. It was slower than molasses in January and the brakes were not that good, but fortunately I was too slow to notice. It was also my first brand-new bike and in a perverse way, it made me a faster rider. I got good because I had to in order to keep up!

Here is my list of the 10 worst production MX bikes ever. It is pretty big because I tried to give a little background an context on each bike instead of just rattling off a bunch of reasons why it was crap..I hope everyone finds it interesting and entertaining.

The ten worst MX bikes ever.
I own the last one on the list. It's why I no longer ride 4 strokes (let's not start anything by this, it's just my personal preference now due to $). Every problem you listed I had except for transmission. The cam/bucket/clip problem happened to me twice. Brand new top end everything and toast 20 minutes later back to back. That $1500 went quick! Now she's sitting pretty with no head.
