My WP AER 48 forks sucks. Should I go with conevalve or Öhlins?

Edited Date/Time 9/6/2018 8:00am
Hi,

I have a KTM 350 with AER 48mm Air forks. I didnt like the fork so I got it revalved. It got a little bit better but I wasnt happy with them so I got them revalved again but Im still not happy with them.

I am thinking about getting the conevalve or öhlins fork insteed. Anyone that have tried both and can give me some tips?

I was on the yzf450 last year and got that revalved and some parts was changed and I was very happy with that suspension. Then I switched to KTM and I love everything about the bike except the fork. So I really need to get the fork issue fixed. If I dont I think I will be back on the yami next year.

Not being an asshole at all, but is your shock sag/shock setup good? Shock setup and especially sag have a huge effect on fork performance.

send them to boughner racing in the states, he specialized in them. He will get them fixed and will save a ton of money compared to the other options

If you liked your sss forks why not trade your current forks ,and then do the sss conversion . I have heard nothing but great things about this . I have a set of 15 4 cs forks that they do the conversion with if you are interested . I am not sure if the AR 48 can be converted

Exactly what is so bad with them?

Edit: But try to find a used set of CV forks if you really dislike the AER48 forks. I think i saw a set of WP CV forks on Blocket a few days ago.

Used pair of cones. Then when you sell the bike take them off and resell of move to new bike.

The conversion is about 1500 with all new parts. So that's more than half of what cone valves would cost. Plus you could off set that a little more with trade plus some cash for what you have

I've never heard anyone complain after buying cone valve forks...

Like these guys said, if your happy with KYB, it's not a bad idea to convert a pair of WP forks to KYB, then you will get the same feel you are used to.

The CC forks are getting good money down here now, few of the local tuners have done wonders with them and people want them instead of their 4CS...

Haha yeah, the CC forks are pretty good. I think mine are just as good as the Showa/KYB stuff. But I want air forks, a 3+lb weight savings would be awesome. I'm a skinny guy riding a 150. I can only assume I'd like the bike more with air forks Cool

Had ohlins and conevalves, conevalves set up by powerband is the way togo
Powerband didn't want to sell me a set I guess. I called a couple times and talked a bit. Said I want some lets do it. He said ok. I said email me the quote and I'll pay you.. Never got back with me. And we had communicated over email so he had my info. Oh well. Maybe he was to busy to make money.

Rode with my CV forks yesterday and today at Albany.... after having Billy at Powerband work them over. (They originally came from Temecula.... the forks were just ok as the setup was for SXWhistling )

Rode the 1st moto on my FC modified 4CS. They are also good...... the CV forks are friggen awesome. Felt just like my Showa Akit stuff.

Before I got Cone Valves, FC set up my 4cs really well. The plushness was similar to CVs just not as much bottom resistance.

Something doesn't seem to add up with your post.

First off, where did you get AER 48 forks from for your 350? Are you Euro based? Second, what didn't you like about the forks when they we're setup with the stock settings? What did you try to setup the forks before sending them out for a re-valve?

You would be the first person I've heard say doesn't like the new AER fork from a performance perspective. I have time on the AER 48's and found them to be very supple and all around very capable forks. I'm not suggesting they are as good as the CV setup, just that they are darn good out of the box.

I'm very interested to hearing your experiences to help with more feedback.

Im running full Öhlins forks and they are awesome. I hade ConeValves on bike before. They are both night and day better than stock.. if I would buy now set i will get only Öhlins internals for AER48 or go full ConeValve.

Cone valves! Last season I had KYB A-kit suspension and now I have WP Cone valves and trax shock. Also riding 350sxf. The WP CV is better than KYB A-kit forks (spring version). Never ridden Ohlins, but Ive heard that Ohlins is good, but not as great as WP or KYB A-kits.

Another vote for the cone valves. I had Ohlins on my 13 250SX and they were really good but I've had cone valves on my last 2 KTMs and they're just plush as the Ohlins but just will not bottom. The handful of KTM or Husky guys that have ridden my 15 & 16 FE450 have all bought the cone valves.

Yes - they have the lastest FC mods..they were done a few weeks ago. They are very nice - I was quite impressed. Still like my CV setup best.

I rode with a local guy yesterday ( # 109 , can't remember his name ) up at Mtn view yesterday. He was riding a 2012 KTM 250 SX that had the trax shock and a modified set of front forks ( Not cone valve ) and said it was an incredible compared to a re-worked set of stock stuff. He mentioned that he had a 16' 350F which had the set of cone valve forks up front , and said they are beyond incredible.

Everything from this thread , and the one I started last week , makes it sound like a guy could get the rear shock working really well through factory connection , but the Cone Valves seem to be the way to go on the forks. At about $3500.00 ....for that price , does a guy get an entire set of brand new forks , or is it a bunch of parts to convert your existing forks?

Gawd dang it....I just want to ride one with that setup and see what it's like. Kinda have a woody for this right now.

Also , to the OP original question...I thought the AER 48's were supposed to be quite a bit better than the 4CS forks?

I rode a 16 450SXF with the latest FC 4CS upgrades. We actually swapped bikes at a local race track and they felt ok to me and were much better than the 4CS that came on my 15 FE450 but they still had that slap down thing going on when I was short on a long table top and still seemed to deflect on small sharp breaking bumps. All in all they were decent and very race-able. We did around 7 laps on each others bikes. I was curious about the new FC mods and he's running the latest Rocket exhaust and I was curious about that as well. He came in from riding my bike and said it was the best suspension that he'd even ridden and that he'd be taking every hr of overtime that his boss would give him so he could buy the cone valves and trax shock. He's had his cone valves now for a cpl wks and he absolutely loves them and is waiting for the trax shock now.

Hey so unfortunately to get the best performance you need the whole fork set up. Best case is finding a used set for around $2,000 if you can wait and keep looking online.

The AER48 are supposed to be much better than 4CS from the media side, but now some mixed reviews from the "average consumer" are coming to light. I really want to try a set to give an opinion on them.

Jeffro- the $3500 ish price is for a compete set of forks with the coatings and everything valved as per the riders needs. You can supposedly get cone valve inserts for a regular set of 4cs forks but I don't know anybody that has done that or the pricing on just the inserts. Same for ohlins, you can buy complete forks or cartridge inserts to put in the existing 4cs fork.

The pricing for CV cartridges is around 1600-1800€

Ok so....lets say i was to pick up a 14' , 15' or 16' 250 sx... I could buy the CV inserts for those 4cs forks for around $1500 - $1800? And for an older 250 sx....what and how would a guy have to do to get the trax shock? And is the shock worth the price over the stock one?

OR....would it be more wise to just get a 17' and forget about the cv and trax stuff.. And FC do their mods? Wonder if a 17' is all that much better compared to a 14'-16' model , not counting the suspension?

My thinking is telling me that if i had a couple year old bike with the Cv and trax may be a better ride?

You can find used Trax shocks for the older KTMs for relatively little money, around 700 bucks since they doesn't fit the latest gen KTMs.
