Motocross or Supercross?

Edited Date/Time 4/6/2022 11:07pm
If you had to choose from a 9 month season for our sport, what does your heart really say?
Motocross or Supercross, only one.

Two current threads try to compare AMA and MXGP, and say that Supercross is the manufactures golden pot, what does your heart say.

Yes, we have probably had this before, but we all know how good the search function can be.

Everybody knows the core of the sport prefers MX. SX is great and all since racing is better than no racing.

From my point of view (2007 Las Vegas final), the only good thing about SX was the spectator facilities and racing.
The prices of food was staggering, parking / transport was expensive and chaotic, drunken boneheads towards the end of the night.

Compared to my MX experience Glen Helen 2002,
Toilets were so so, everything else was a blast.
I watched from all vantage points that I could sneak into. Freaking awesome.

I voted SX. After voting and looking at the posts, I wondered to myself if you asked this poll during the later half of the MX season, would I have still voted SX or would I have voted MX (meaning am I SX biased right now because that's what I've been watching for several months and past MX seasons aren't fresh on my mind)? Maybe I'll remember to come back to this thread at that time and see if my answer remains the same.

Motocross and it's not even close for me. The US Nationals are my favorite followed by MXGP and then SX.

Guys who can win both are always more respected than guys who only win one of the two, in the US at least

Didn't take a microsecond to chose. If SX went away completely...I wouldn't shed a tear. BUT...I'd lose my mind all winter....so I watch it 'cause it's dirt bikes. Ideally, we'd have the nats all summer and a winter outdoor series in FLA, CA, and south TX. Yeah, buddyCool

Man, we need to leave this alone...

Right now we have 4 months of Supercross (Jan 8 thru May 7 = 121 days) for 17 races.

That's plenty of good racing to get us thru the winter &, sadly, seems to be more than enough time for PLENTY of riders to get injured.

Then we roll into Motocross at the end of May for 3 months of racing (May 27 thru September 3 = 98 days) over 12 events.

All combined that's 9 months of racing and it works.

If I was going to change anything? I'd STOP grooming our MX Nationals Tracks like it's a damn Supercross. It was a mistake when we started doing it and it's evolved into an outright "handicap" when we go to the MXoN and race the Europeans that actually race hard-assed and much more "nasty and abusive" outdoor tracks that are left to mother nature and the riders to groom.

Also, I'd put an honest to goodness SAND TRACK on the schedule...maybe return to Sandy Florida or even up in Michigan. Minnesota or Wisconsin where they have some AMAZING sand...expand the REALLY sandy sections at Millville...if that's possible...? Again, I'd do this to get us back in the game at MXoN.

While I truly appreciate SX for what it is I don't come close to looking forward to it like I do the outdoor season. I will admit that I love that SX starts right after the holidays and Saturday nights are awesome because of it. looking back I have very few memories of what went on at any given SX I ever attended and in fact I don't even go anymore, I just watch them all on TV. I have tons and tons of memories from attending outdoor races though. I'm also really old school because I love the "inconvenience" of watching motocross outdoors. I love walking around and seeing tracks from every point of view, I love that the weather can be a serious factor on any given weekend, I love watching guys like Eli and Barcia wringing the living hell out of their bikes while riding on the ragged edge at Red Bud or Washougal. I love the people that attend the outdoors and the smell of tailgate food cooking and on and on. There really is no comparison in my book.

I enjoy SX... But I love MX. Wife and I are planning to do the full season in an RV after we retire. Back and forth across the country. Looking at 2026 right now. I hope there's some epic rivalries going on. Wink

I personally like MX better, however it’s easier for a casual fan or someone who isn’t really into it or doesn’t ride to follow SX. My wife likes to watch sx with me, mx not so much.

My response is always the same: the SX format is easier for me to watch than four 30+2’s back to back, and only seeing 5 guys. I don’t have the attention span.

By the end of the season tho, I’m ready for MX (and vice versa)

Towards the end of SX, I start to look forward to the outdoors.. then towards the end of the outdoors I can’t wait for SX..
I think we are lucky to have both!

Exactly.
If this poll was made at the end of December. Most ppl would say sx.
Now we are at a point where the sx season is getting boring. Everyone is getting excited for a fresh outdoors season. So they are voting mx.

You cut out supercross and the sport would die.

SX is just a cabin "fever reliever" until the real racing starts up in the summer.

Having an indoor and outdoor season is great, cutting the sx season down to 12 rounds would make it perfect.

Cheap sx tickets are about the same as a race day gate fee at the nationals. There are more drunk people at the byob nationals than the sx races I've been to.

MXGP is a perfect example of how dead MX would be without SX. So not dead at all or even close to it.

I know I’m gonna get flamed here but this whole “real men ride motocross” is ridiculous in my opinion..
In SX these dudes triple onto a table then quad out, go around a berm, grab a gear and hammer through giant rutty cupped out whoops.. SX is freakin gnarly too.
