Little background. I use to ride amateur 250 B class on a crf450. I'm 37 now. In the last couple years decided and wanted a bike to cover more ground in colorado/utah. I bought a KTM XC-W 500.. Now besides a headlight, a license plate, no turn signals and a tail light, I'm going to go out and ride some moto on the track. Let's just say in I can keep up with most the average to fast riders and I can do all the jumps on my bike at Thunder Valley Lakewood.

your riding on the track with me.. Would you

a) laugh at me?
b) yell at me to get my trail bike off the track?
c) come check out my bike in the pits and come say hi?
4) try to roost me in every corner?

See you next weekend if it's not snowing.. My hope is the 500 will be just as fun on the track as it is in the single track. I would like to have a moto only bike too, but doesn't really make sense if my KTM handles all the big jumps and rides like a moto bike.

Bringing her home a couple months ago..

There was a dude that raced at Glen Helen on some sort of dual sport a few years back. He used to honk his horn in corners. Make sure you do that, just to piss people off!

I would say kudos to someone that still gets what moto is all about

(although you come close to the line when you appear to worry so much about what other people would think......You can clear that up by answering a simple question........Would you still do it if they chose A or B of your quiz?)

As long as this KTM XC-W 500 that you speak of has 2 wheels(not 4), you'll be just fine. And if indeed you have a horn on it..... use it!

Hahaha good point about the horn. That will be fun and get some WTF.. Not only looking to do some track riding, but curious what the 500 can do on a track. I'll do some gopro footage at Thunder Valley and report back..

Bingo!
Only people that you should take any crap from are the ones that can pass you.

But yeah you may want to lose the kickstand.....for your own safety if nothing else.

Good point on kick stand. It has a rubber band holder, but still hazard if it breaks..

You HAVE to keep the kickstand for effect. You should ride the bike to the track, pull up to the starting gate, and flop the kick stand down and prep your spot, right before you pull the holeshot.

In a perfect world.... when you put your kickstand up, its final contact hits the repositioned electric start button located somewhere around the swingarm. i'm assuming 60-70% of the riders would pack up and leave knowing they have no chance of winning

I would be really impressed if it was a 15 year old Husaberg. A new Ktm not so much.

Nothing like having a rider pass me then seeing the brake light come on going into the corner. I have not had anyone use
a turn signal when cutting me off yet.

I'd help you adjust your suspension for the track and keep notes that allow us to get it back to "Trail-Settings" at the end of the day.

Note: Put the Rubber-Band around the kick-stand for track riding: Tha's why it's there.

Your bike is one of the BEST all-arounders EVER made. I ride with plenty of guys in Baja that have that scoot...EXCELLENT motor-cycle.

Then there's my answers to your Q's:

a) laugh at me? No. With you? Yes; because, you'll be one of the few people that using his KTM correctly..and that's jus' funny!
b) yell at me to get my trail bike off the track? No. Yell at ya to get your elbows up and get on the balls of your feet? Yes, if needed.
c) come check out my bike in the pits and come say hi? Yup.
4) try to roost me in every corner? Sure, if you earn it!

Check out big Ken playing on his 250 EXC at the weekend.

If a stock EXC is good enough for a factory GP rider to have ona track, then it's good enough for any of us!

Me and my CRF250X have a motto: fastest guy at the track with a kickstand and a headlight...

Tell everyone in the pits that they have "PACE BIKES" now, then use the Hazards until you lap them.

I can brake check now too because if they run into me, I can say, "Didn't you see the bright red light on my fender!"

A buddy of mine used to live in Aurora, CO. When he moved there he bought a new KTM380 EXC because he liked to ride out at Rampart any chance he got. Anytime I went to visit I took my bike and we hit every track in the Denver area. I don't recall anyone ever saying a word about the headlight once they finally caught up to him...in the pits.

My son rode his Husky TE310 in a LL qualifier last year, full street gear, headlight on and all. When I overheard a stranger in the crowd mention the "street bike" to his buddy, I let them know that he planned to ride it to LL's if he qualified (from PA). He finished in a qualifying position but had not paid the extra fee for LL's as he had no intention of going. Made it easy to spot him on the track. And pissed off a bunch of guys in 25+.
I blew up my TC 450 in practice at High Point one year and rode my TE510 in 40+A, finished mid pack after stoping twice to turn off my heated grips. Was blacked flagged at finish and was told to remove my tag for next moto as it might cut someone in a crash. If you are riding hard its almost impossible to honk horn, flash lights/signals, turn grips on or off. But it's better than spectating.
Have fun with it wherever you ride it and it won't matter what others think.
