Moto Helmets vs NFL Helmets

Moto Helmets vs NFL Helmets. I understand that it's not apples to apples but what if we were to compare and rate. Thoughts??

Good post! I have no clue, but my gut is telling me that with all of the concussion protocol and research that the NFL has conducted, the NFL helmet may provide a little more protection.

You're designing for two completely different scenarios.

A football helmet needs to withstand multiple "small" impacts (yes, I'm well aware they hit hard, we're talking in relative terms). A motocross helmet needs to withstand one "big" impact, since that's all it's meant to see, and the best way we currently know of to do that is displacing energy by effectively destroying the helmet rather than your head.

I am not a physicists, but I believe the football helmet is designed to flex/bow and the air sac arrangement is designed to disperse force. My football concussions were usually facemask on facemask. I do not believe the motocross helmet is designed to flex.

Apples to oranges - but I’ll say this - my son has two Riddell Revolution helmets (2 different teams) and neither helmet comes close to looking as cool as a motocross helmet.

I agree on both counts. My son wore a Riddell Revolution his sophomore year and I hated it more than he did! It has to be the ugliest football helmet ever made. The Riddell Speed and Speedflex he wore the following season were better helmets and looked worlds better!

Yes, long overdue subject. We get radios though.
I think pros get a radio in NFL, one for quarterback, one for a guy on defense, stops with 15 seconds left on the play clock, one way, team to player

The wife works for Nike and has been privy to some NFL helmet discussions, direction of engineering and emerging technologies within the helmet industry. There is some really cool things going on, from an impact perspective 6Ds design was a head if it’s time.

A one hit wonder is not an acceptable design criteria. Especially when after that one hit, you have no way of knowing if your helmet has been damaged. Guaranteed thousands of riders are using compromised helmets daily. As far as I know Kali makes the only one capable and tested as sustaining multiple hits.

Very true! Haha! If you don’t mind me asking how much do the Riddell helmets run these days? Just curious? I’ve never bought football gear, as my son is more into baseball.

I can't wait for the conservation of momentum arguments to start back up in this football helmet thread.

Most concussions don’t come from “the big one”. Snell helmets are over designed for the little and medium ones.

Football players don't hit their head on trees, rocks, and other immovable objects at speeds greater than 20mph.

This is a great resource for football and hockey helmets. I tried to get them to test roller derby helmets but its lower on their priority list. They said if I supply the helmets (6 new unopened boxes of each one) they'd put a rush on it.

The same could be done for moto helmets.

It just shows how the industry treats concussions.

If you don't know that there has been more attention to concussions in moto in the last 10 years than there was in the rest of history combined then you are the one with your head in the sand.

Nice try, but that's in reference to fluid flow...

Around $350ish - I reconditioned one that was around $175 for because I bought a new face mask too - That’s for a youth speedflex though - the adults are more $$. I think the Vicis (revolutionary helmet) retails around $1000. A custom fit Riddell is about $750.

Sorry, doing some shopping at Lowe’s with my dog. Kind of busy. You might try reading the thread, it’s a short one.
