This has always been in my head. Who was the most promising, hyped, skilled amateur to ever leave the ranks?
Adam Cianciarulo, JS, RC, Alessi, etc...
An insider that has been around for a long time and goes to all the mini o's, LL and amateur events said that the raw speed of Jordon Smith when he was an amateur was insane and had to be one of the fastest amateurs of all time.
So what you boys think?

James Stewart
Travis Pastrana
Ricky Carmichael
Ryan Villopoto

And they ALL won the 125 National Motocross title in their rookie seasons.

Ryan Villopoto was always second place to Mike Alessi. What about AC though? first 4 races he enters in the pro ranks he wins them.

Did Antonio Cairoli do LL and other amateur stuff like that? I don't recall him being hyped as he was over in Europe, but that would have been a while ago.

The other three I totally agree with. And probably add Pastrana

Most Hyped? Probably a tie between Alessi and AC.

Guys like Stewart and RC entered Pros really before the days of social media, etc so for that reason I don't think the hype was as big. Guys like RC and Stewart dominated the amateurs ranks in a way that really no others have. RC would race Decker, Reynard, Windham on superminis for crying out loud and was competitive against them and was several years younger. RC absolutely decimated his competition from the time he was like 7 years old all the way to the pros. Even Stewart was not as dominant in my opinion.

So RC and Stewart were about as much as a sure thing as can be, so for that reason as well as the social media hype I don't think there was as much hype around them as say AC and Alessi.

Just my .2 cents.

the most hyped. not the ones who necessarily produced

I would have to go with Mike alessi. He possible has the largest amount of amateur titles, but when he turned pro he was in contention for many titles but he never sealed the deal and his skills in SX havent ever been where he needed them to be.

I dont believe he did an LL. AC 222 reminds me of Valentino Rossi. These guys don't seem to get affected by age or technology, they still go fast as hell and balls out.
I could imagine him being the GOAT of the GP's.

Robbie Reynard and Austin Forkner.

RC, Stewart, AC, and Alessi have already been listed.

Reynard wasn't near as dominant as he could have been because he was such a poor starter. It was really quite remarkable. I remember he had some epic rides at Lake Whitney coming from the back and almost winning. Sometimes winning anyways. Probably one of the worst starter to track speed ratios possible.

I started seeing national-level pimping of Ricky when he was on 60s, and that was back in the era of print-media dominance, where aside from race result listings, amateur racing as an entire entity probably got a few hundred words of total ink a year.

Cairoli did? I didn't realize he was that successful right off the bat.

I kinda think hype is more because the substance is unknown. Hype is about an unknown or untested product.

By the time RC was 14 you knew something was special. There is always a transition from minis to big bikes. Top mini riders sometimes didn't make a good transition. Guys who weren't all that on minis jumped to big bikes and did better.

RC has been the GOAT pretty much on any bike any class since age 7. That's almost impossible. But that's why he's the GOAT.

I have to say James Stewart or at least here in the southeast. The stuff that was told of the things he could do on a bike was legendary.

From an outsider.
James stewart was the most anticipated and Mike Allesi was the biggest show to arrive .
