I am just amazed at how little modern day gloves have no protection from rocks and other stuff compared to the 90's gloves.

I had the boots and gloves that Jeff Ward is wearing in this photo. Those gloves are my all-time favorites, still to this day. They had biofoam on the knuckles and fingers. I never felt an ounce of roost.

all about comfort now. not so much protection.
look at body armour/ Roost guards the racers wear now.

same with gear with slim fit and compression jerseys .

So are we saying that the big bad ass 450's are not shooting rocks as fast as old 90's 2 strokes?

I just want to add how cheaply made gloves are made these days. Finger ends wear out and Velcro hook and loop tears off in no time compared with gloves from 5-10 years ago and im talking all the big brands not just the cheapest stuff in the RockyMountain bargin bin.

I know what you mean. But nowadays it’s so much easier to get gear, I don’t think it bothers a lot of people to replace gloves, etc...

When I was a kid, we had to get what the local mom & pop shop had on the shelve or drive out of town. I’ll buy gear now just because I think something is cool and have the option

Tight jerseys Look horrible, I don,t want the world starring at my nipples. 90,s gear I think would be a big hit. 90,s. Gloves, pants, very Cool. Rider asked me what Gear ya wearing next year, I told him Wolf Sport without laughing.smile

Anybody notice that sizing seems to be running smaller too? Like the Chinese or Indonesian (where most are made) hand models are much smaller than US market. I used to wear a large glove, now most large gloves seem way too small.

When is the last time your finger was hit by a rock on a normal track? I wear minimalist shift black label and love them. Zero rock protection.

Holy crap, $34 gloves back before they were even wearing full face helmets?

Just buy these gloves at home depot. 3 pairs for $10s and they last a long time.... They even have 3 stylish colors in 1 pack!

I agree gloves suck now. If they would bring back mid 90s to early 2000s gear looks with some of the modern ventilation I'd be on it. Some of these things there is just no protection at all in these jerseys they are so thin.

They are all shit. Have said this for years.. no finger protection . I now ride with handguards all the time because Gloves are so fricking thin. Used to love my old JT's with the rubber down the back.. looked cool, and had some proper roost protection.

And I have a set of Fly gear that is literally like wearing Pyjamas... nobody dresses for the crash any more , that's for sure.

Wish they still made them like this. I use hand guards since gloves offer no real protection as well.

|

I absolutely agree. I think there was a sweet spot between when there was too much "plastic" like material that made them feel like there was no freedom of motion and the now, very low profile gloves. They don't last, they have no protection. My first pair of gloves was a set of AXO gloves from around 2002. Man I thought they were cool.

I also agree everything seems so much tighter, thinner, less durable now.

Oh..and more expensive.

Yeah, gloves have gotten cheaper in more ways than one. Note that the boots were only $200 though, and I think they were made by Gearne.
I was definitely wearing a full-face helmet in 1987, though - Jeff Ward must not have cared about his teeth. That, or he was fully aware that the sheer ugliness of the Shoei full-face at that time would have added ten seconds to his lap times.

Tomac and/or Anderson for 2020.....

I’d rather run hand guards on the handle bar when I was worried about roost than wear thick, winter-esque gloves 24/7.

|

1/31/2020 4:29 PM

I think certain hand guards look cool as shit on any Moto bike. Both mine have a set.

You can't be in your right mind if you would rather wear these gloves designed for yardwork than a pair of modern day moto gloves.

It’s all good till you get hit with a sizable rock on your fingers. You ever been hit with a rock the size of a potato.?Most of my riding isn’t on a groomed track. I go through gloves like socks. They’re comfortable but, as others have said offer no protection. Have you ever worn a pair of those so called yard work gloves?

|

1/31/2020 5:10 PM

Modern day gear has no protection from anything. Its paper thin.

|

1/31/2020 5:24 PM

Does anyone remember the sticky lester gloves? Either SMP or LBZ....

|

1/31/2020 5:28 PM

Wearing those kevlar glove liners under my moto gloves for about 5 years now and never a blister or a cut. They are the ones that chefs use to avoid knife cuts and cost about $8 a pair.

|

1/31/2020 5:48 PM

Oh yes this has been discussed before, modern day gloves absolutely suck as far as protection.

And yes so does the rest of the equipment.
paper thin jerseys and Pants I'm from the old school and cannot get enough protection. I dress for the crash. w00t
Maybe that's one reason I've been riding over 50 years.

Out here in Arizona there are a lot of rocks and I've used handguards on my bikes for a long time.

I also get these Street gloves from Cycle Gear. plastic on the knuckles and when I trail ride getting constantly whacked by mesquite trees and other assorted bushes with thorns really help out.

I tried on some thor spectrum gloves the other day, they had quite a bit of padding on them. I ended up going with the rebound glove as they had a little less protection but more mobility

|

1/31/2020 6:42 PM

I wear these Thor agile gloves. Like them so much I bought a few pair just incase they quit making them.
They are paper thin literally. And you can see through the vented sections on the tops and side of your fingers. They fit so tight you have to pull each finger down get them all the way on.
They are awesome. And yes I've been hit with rocks, and even hit branches with my hands. Shake it off and keep going
